Yulla Kanda in Winter 2026: December to April Access and Snow

Most people planning Yulla Kanda in winter make the same mistake. They see that the Kinnaur highway is open and assume the lake is open too.
You are actually dealing with three separate questions. Can you drive through Kinnaur? Can you reach Yulla Khas village? Can you walk the upper trail to the lake? Each one has its own answer, on its own day.
Quick Answer: Can You Visit Yulla Kanda in Winter?
Not reliably. From December to April, snow and ice usually make the upper trail to the lake and Krishna temple unsuitable for routine tourist trekking, even when parts of the Kinnaur highway stay usable.
We found no official blanket ban, and rare winter visits do happen. But April thaw does not guarantee a passable trek.
Where Is Yulla Kanda, and Why Is Winter Access Difficult?

Yulla Khas, the Rora Valley and the Krishna temple
Yulla Kanda sits above Yulla village in the Rora Valley of Kinnaur district, Himachal Pradesh. At the top, you find a small alpine lake with a Krishna temple beside it.
For local families, this is a place of worship first and a trek second. The Kinnaur district administration includes the religious site in its own travel information.
People often call it the world's highest Krishna temple. That label circulates widely, but no verified global record backs it, so treat it as a popular description rather than a proven fact.
The legends tied to the temple matter deeply to the people who live here. Respect them as faith and tradition, not as history you can check on a signboard.
The Himachal Forest Department's ecotourism master plan puts the temple at about 3,895 metres and rates the trek moderate.
A separate state government trekking portal lists the Yulla Trek altitude as 4,114 and rates it easy. The portal doesn't say what point that figure measures, so don't read it as the temple's height. The two listings conflict.
Village road versus the mountain trail
This detail catches most winter planners off guard. The Forest Department plan describes a motorable but unpaved road only as far as Yulla village.
From the village, you walk about 12 km one way to the temple. No road reaches the lake, so never plan around a vehicle taking you close.
In winter, that 12 km becomes the whole problem. A village road you can drive tells you nothing about a mountain path under snow.
If you want to see Kinnaur in the colder months without staking everything on the lake, our Kinnaur tour packages give you a road based starting point that we adjust to real conditions.
Is Yulla Kanda Accessible from December to April?

Rarely, and never on a schedule you can lock in weeks ahead. Here is how each month generally looks, based on the seasonal sources we rely on.
Yulla Kanda in December: Snow and early winter access
December is when winter settles over the upper Rora Valley. Seasonal guides describe the upper trail turning snowbound from this month.
The village approach can turn icy, and each week adds more uncertainty to the upper route. One fresh snowfall can change the trail overnight.
You may have seen news about a December visit. A report dated 29 December 2025 described a rare pilgrimage to the Krishna temple in snowy conditions, with devotees performing kirtan.
That story is real, and it is an exception. One devoted group managing it does not make the route workable for regular tourists, and it does not mean anyone runs a safe guided December trek open to everyone.
Yulla Kanda in January and February: Deep winter
These are the hardest months. Seasonal sources describe the upper sections as snowbound, and you face long cold exposure with little shelter on the way up.
Snow can bury the path itself. Route finding gets hard when you can't see where the trail runs, and a wrong turn in deep winter costs far more than time.
We won't quote January or February snow depths, daily temperatures or a count of trekkable days. No reliable data exists for this exact trail, and anyone giving you exact figures is guessing.
For most people, a trek in these two months is simply impractical. Treat it that way unless qualified local mountain professionals tell you otherwise for a specific day.
Yulla Kanda in March: Snow remains at higher elevations
March fools a lot of people. Down in Shimla or Rampur, days start feeling softer, and you naturally assume the mountains are warming up too.
Higher up, snow and ice can hang on around the lake long after the lower valleys clear. Seasonal guides still describe the upper sections as snowbound in March.
An early spring visit needs fresh trail information from someone who has actually been up recently. We never promise that the trail opens in March, and you shouldn't plan as if it will.
Yulla Kanda in April: Does the trail reopen?
April creates the most confusion online. Himachal Tourism lists April to October as a good period for Kinnaur in general, and many people read that as a green light for the lake.
It isn't. That window covers the district broadly, not a high trail near 3,895 metres. In April, the upper route may still hold snow or turn unstable as it thaws.
Thaw timing shifts every year. It depends on how much snow fell, how much sun each slope gets, and whether a new weather system drops fresh snow mid month.
You may find someone's April photos from the temple. One person's visit proves that one person got there, on one day, with their own fitness and experience. It does not prove the route is open or right for a first time trekker.
Yulla Kanda does not reopen automatically on 1 April. To understand how hard the route feels even in normal conditions, read our guide to Yulla Kanda trek difficulty.
How Much Snow Falls at Yulla Kanda, and Does the Lake Freeze?

What can travellers expect to see?
In the cold months, expect snow covered ground near the top, ice on parts of the trail and a lake that may be frozen or partly frozen.
We can't tell you how many centimetres of snow you'll find. No verified monthly snow depth record exists for this site, and nobody can guarantee snow cover on your dates.
Never walk on the frozen lake. No reliable ice thickness assessment exists, and ice that looks solid at the edge can be thin further out.
Skip the photo on the ice completely. Plenty of travellers chase that shot, and no picture is worth falling through.
Why is April snow unpredictable?
Several things shape the trail at once. Higher spots hold snow longer, shaded sections stay icy while sunny ones melt, and fresh snowfall can reset everything.
Daytime thaw and overnight refreezing make it worse. Snow that turns soft and wet by afternoon can freeze into hard, slippery ice by the next morning.
That's why timing changes the whole experience. In our experience planning mountain trips, the same stretch can feel like two different routes at dawn and after lunch, so any good local guide sets a strict turnaround time.
District figures don't help much either. The IMD February 2026 district summary reportedly recorded 17.9 mm of precipitation in Kinnaur against a normal of 104.3 mm, roughly 83% below normal.
That shows how much one winter can differ from another across the district. It does not tell you how much snow sat at the Krishna temple, so never turn it into a Yulla Kanda snow forecast.
Is the Shimla, Tapri, Yulla Khas Road Open in Winter?

Think of the journey in three stages. Each stage needs its own check, and a yes on one never means a yes on the next.
Stage one: The main road through Kinnaur
The usual approach runs from Shimla through Narkanda, Rampur and Tapri, following the Sutlej Valley. NH-05 carries you through the main Kinnaur corridor.
We have no verified winter travel time or distance for this route, so we won't give you one. Plan a slow daylight drive and leave room for delays.
A small thing that makes this drive better: fill a flask with hot chai at your hotel in Rampur before you head further up. If a roadblock holds you for an hour, you'll be glad you didn't rely on finding an open stall.
Kinnaur roads change fast. In 2026, the district administration published temporary traffic restrictions at Nigulsari and Nathpa, including notices dated 19 August and 5 September 2026.
Those notices are history now. They show how quickly restrictions appear, but they say nothing about road status this December or next spring.
Stage two: The approach to Yulla Khas
Once you leave the national highway, you take a smaller unpaved road to Yulla Khas. An open NH-05 does not mean this road is clear.
Before you turn off, find out whether snow has fallen on the village approach, whether locals are getting through, and what the surface looks like right now.
Ask one more question most people forget. Can you get back down safely if the weather turns while you're up there? A road you climb in the morning can ice over by evening.
Here's an insider tip generic guides miss: Ask someone who drove that stretch today or yesterday, like a local driver or a contact in the village, not the person selling you a trip.
Stage three: The actual trek to the lake
Reaching Yulla Khas tells you nothing final about the 12 km above it. The upper trail carries its own snow, its own ice and its own risks.
Confirm all three stages separately, through credible local contacts, as close to your travel day as you can. If any stage is a no, the lake is a no.
For general background on timing Kinnaur road trips by season, see our Kinnaur road planning guide. It helps you plan, but it can't predict this winter's roads.
Is the Yulla Kanda Trek Safe in Snow?

Main winter hazards
Snow changes this trek completely. Hard snow turns slippery underfoot, while soft snow can give way under your weight without warning.
Ice on the path makes every step a risk. Snow can hide parts of the trail, and low cloud or falling snow can cut your visibility to almost nothing.
Add long cold exposure, tricky navigation and remote terrain where help takes a long time to reach you, and small mistakes become serious ones.
Snowy mountain slopes can also carry avalanche risk, depending on snow load and recent weather. We know of no verified evidence marking any specific slope here as a hotspot, so only a qualified local professional can judge that on the day.
What equipment and preparation matter?
If you ever face cold conditions on this route, warm layers and proper insulation come first. Waterproof footwear with solid grip matters just as much.
Carry a way to navigate that works without mobile signal, enough food and water, protection from wind and snow, and a way to call for help.
Most important of all, set your turnaround time before you start. Stick to it, even if the temple feels close.
No single item makes this trek safe. Not a particular boot, not snow chains, not crampons and not a four wheel drive vehicle. Gear helps, but it doesn't replace judgement.
If the route calls for real winter mountain skills, you need qualified local mountain professionals to assess it. And you need to accept their answer when it's no.
How does altitude change the risk?
The Forest Department puts the temple at about 3,895 metres. At that height, altitude illness can affect anyone, however fit they feel.
Gain height gradually and give your body time to adjust. Watch for headache, nausea, unusual tiredness and breathlessness that keeps getting worse.
If symptoms worsen, go down and get medical help. Don't push on to finish the trek, and talk to a doctor before your trip about any medicines.
Our regular-season Yulla Kanda trek itinerary shows how a normal summer trip paces the climb. It is not a ready made December to April plan, so please don't use it as one.
Can Beginners, Families or Solo Travellers Attempt Yulla Kanda in Winter?

Published ratings for this trek don't agree. The Forest Department calls it moderate, while the state trekking portal calls it easy.
Neither rating describes snowbound winter conditions. A pleasant summer walk can turn into a serious mountain undertaking once snow and ice cover the path.
Ordinary beginners, casual family groups and underprepared solo travellers should not treat a snowy Yulla Kanda as a sightseeing outing. That's the honest answer, even if it isn't the one you hoped for.
A rare specialist expedition with experienced people is a very different thing from a regular tourist departure. Don't measure yourself against the first if you're planning the second.
We don't set a fixed age limit, and we found no rule banning solo visits. But alone in winter, your margin for error shrinks sharply, because nobody can help if you slip or fall ill.
Are Permits, Guides, Homestays and Camps Available in Winter?

What permissions might be needed?
Certain areas of upper Kinnaur have protected area rules, mainly for foreign visitors. Our research doesn't show that those rules automatically cover the Yulla Kanda route.
We found no verified Yulla Kanda entry fee, foreigner permit fee, compulsory guide rule or camping charge.
Before you go, confirm current forest, camping, temple and expedition requirements directly with the local authorities.
Can travellers rely on overnight facilities?
Not in winter. We can't confirm that homestays, camps, toilets, shops or water sources in the higher mountains operate between December and April.
Summer stay descriptions online don't count as winter schedules. A homestay that welcomes trekkers in June may sit shut in January.
How Should You Plan a December to April Trip?

What we tell our travellers who ask about a winter Yulla Kanda trip is simple. Do Kinnaur in winter if you love the cold, and save the lake for the season it suits.
Plan A: A flexible road based Kinnaur visit
Build your trip around stays and roads that someone has confirmed usable close to your dates. Keep the route conservative and add spare days.
Don't write Yulla Khas or the upper lake into the plan as a sure stop. If conditions allow a village visit, treat it as a bonus, not the purpose of the trip.
Here's a money saving tip from how we plan winter trips. Choose refundable or pay at property stays wherever you can, and avoid big non refundable advances for anything above the main road.
In winter, flexibility saves you more money than any discount. Expect weather to change things, and cancel parts of the plan without regret.
Plan B: Postpone Yulla Kanda itself
If winter doesn't support access, move the temple trek to a better season. The lake will still be there in June.
A safe change of plan always beats chasing a booking you already paid for or a snow photo you saw online. Money already spent pushes people into risks they'd never otherwise take.
What should you check the day before travel?
The evening before, check recent NH-05 notifications from the Kinnaur district administration and the latest forecast from IMD Shimla.
Then call your local contacts. Confirm your transport, the village road, your lodging, the actual trail condition and whether you can return safely the same way.
Check again on the morning you leave. Mountain weather can shift overnight, and a five minute call at breakfast can save you a wasted day on the road.
If you'd rather base your winter trip somewhere with more options, our Shimla tour packages let you enjoy the hills while keeping Kinnaur as a weather dependent extra.
How Much Does a Yulla Kanda Trip Cost in Winter?

We found no reliable published standard price for a December to April Yulla Kanda trek. Winter departure dates and prices are not currently confirmed, so travellers should check availability and the latest rates directly with the operator before making any bookings.
Our normal season group tour page shows starting options of ₹7,499 per person for triple sharing and ₹8,999 per person for double sharing, depending on your booking choices and departure arrangements.
Those are regular season examples. They are not winter prices, and they don't mean a winter trek runs at those rates.
Winter adds costs you can't see in advance. Road delays can mean extra nights, changed transport or a full reschedule, and what you pay depends on your booking terms.
For a full breakdown of normal season expenses, read our Yulla Kanda trek cost guide.
When Is a Better Time to Visit Yulla Kanda?

Commercial season guides commonly point to late May to October as the trekking season, as long as the trail clears and the weather cooperates.
Late May and June mark the start of the season. September to early October also suits many trekkers, while July and August call for extra caution because of the monsoon.
A news report from 18 May 2026 described the shrine reopening to devotees as the snow receded. That tells you what happened in 2026. It doesn't fix an official opening date for 2027.
The state trekking portal shows a minimum of 3 days and an opening and closing window of 22 to 24 June 2026 for its listed entry. Those dates belong to that one listing, not to the whole season.
When the season opens, our seasonal Yulla Kanda group trek handles transport, pacing and stays so you can focus on the walk.
Where Can You Check the Latest Yulla Kanda Conditions?

Use the Kinnaur district administration's notifications for road restrictions. Use IMD Shimla for official weather forecasts.
For the village road and the trail, talk to informed local contacts with recent first hand knowledge.
Old articles and social media posts, including this one, don't confirm live access. Treat anything dated as background, not permission.
Be wary of anyone who guarantees a winter trek to the lake. Nobody can promise mountain weather, and a confident guarantee in January is a warning sign, not a selling point.
In an emergency, call 112. Himachal Pradesh district disaster assistance also uses 1077. Save both numbers before you lose signal.
If you have questions about your own dates, you can WhatsApp us and we'll help you think it through.
Don't set off just because the highway looks open or a website shows a departure. Check all three stages, every time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Yulla Kanda open in December?
Not for routine tourist trekking. Snow usually affects the upper trail from December. A rare snowy pilgrimage in late December 2025 made the news, but that was an exception, not proof that ordinary visitors can safely reach the lake.
Can you trek to the Krishna temple in January?
Normal recreational trekking is generally unsuitable in January. Seasonal sources describe the upper sections as snowbound, with heavy cold exposure and difficult route finding. If anyone suggests a specific day looks possible, confirm that day's actual trail status with qualified local contacts first.
How much snow is there at Yulla Kanda in February?
Nobody has a verified, reliable monthly snow depth figure for this trail. District precipitation data covers all of Kinnaur, not the temple itself. Expect snow and ice up high, but don't trust anyone quoting exact centimetres for your dates.
Does Yulla Kanda become accessible in March?
Usually not. Weather may soften at lower elevations, but snow and ice can persist around the lake and on the upper trail. An early spring attempt needs recent, first hand trail information from local contacts, and even then, a turnaround may be the right call.
Is Yulla Kanda safe to visit in April?
April is unpredictable. Thaw timing varies every year, and refreezing can turn soft snow into ice overnight. The trail may still hold snow or unstable sections. Get a specific local assessment of the trail before deciding, and don't rely on old online photos.
Does Yulla Kanda Lake freeze completely?
The lake can freeze or partly freeze in the cold months, but nobody has verified complete coverage or safe ice thickness. Never walk, stand or skate on the lake. Ice that looks solid near the edge can be dangerously thin further out.
Can you reach Yulla Khas village by car in winter?
It depends on current conditions on the unpaved village approach, which you must check separately from NH-05. Snow, ice and road surface all matter, plus whether you can return safely. Ask someone who drove that stretch very recently.
Are snow treks to Yulla Kanda organised for beginners?
We know of no verified beginner winter departures. Rare specialist expeditions with experienced people are a different thing from standard group trekking. If someone offers you a beginner friendly winter lake trek, ask hard questions about who assesses the conditions and how.
Do you need a permit to trek or camp at Yulla Kanda?
Confirm any route, forest, temple or camping permissions with local authorities before you go. Protected area rules apply to certain upper Kinnaur destinations, mainly for foreigners, but nothing we found shows they automatically cover Yulla Kanda. We know of no verified fees.
Are homestays or camps open in winter?
We couldn't verify any reliable December to April operating schedule for homestays, camps or facilities on this route. Summer descriptions online don't confirm winter opening. Book only stays you've confirmed directly, and prefer flexible cancellation terms.
What is the safest alternative if the Yulla Kanda trail is blocked?
Switch to a road based Kinnaur trip using stays and roads someone has confirmed usable, or reschedule the high altitude trek for late May to October. A safe change of plan always beats forcing a winter attempt.
