Things to Do in Himachal in Winter 2026-27: Activities to Check Before You Book

Most people book a winter trip for the snow and then find the ski slope shut, the ropeway paused for wind, or the road to their hotel blocked.
This guide by Travel Coffee covers the things to do in Himachal in winter, where each one happens, and what to check before you pay anyone.
Quick Answer
The main things to do in Himachal in winter are skiing, snowboarding, sledging, snow tubing, ice skating, ropeway rides and guided snow walks.
Solang Valley, Kufri and Narkanda are the established snow sport spots. Shimla has a natural outdoor ice skating rink.
The main winter season runs from December to February. January and February usually give you better chances of settled snow at higher places.
Real conditions on the day decide everything. Snowfall, road access and each paid activity can change daily, so confirm before you book.
What Should You Know About Himachal in Winter Before Planning Activities?

Here is what most first time visitors get wrong. They think snow in the mountains means snow in town, and snow on the ground means the activities are running.
Neither is true. Manali town can stay dry while Solang, higher up, has snow. Shimla can get a light dusting that melts by noon.
Falling Snow vs Snow You Can Actually Ski On
Fresh snowfall looks magical. It does not give you a ski slope.
Skiing and tubing need snow that has built up and settled on a suitable slope. A single night of flakes rarely does that.
Why Heavy Snow Can Ruin Your Activity Day
Heavy snow makes the views better. It also closes roads, stops ropeways and keeps operators off the slopes until things are safe.
So the best snow day for photos can be the worst day to reach an activity point.
Pick One Base, Not Five Destinations
What we tell our travellers: choose one main base for a short winter trip. Manali, Shimla or Dharamshala each give you plenty to do nearby.
Linking far apart towns in winter means long drives on roads that can close without warning. One base also saves you money on transfers and extra hotel nights.
What Are the Best Things to Do in Himachal in Winter?

For each activity below, you will find where to look, who it suits and what to confirm before paying.
Skiing in Solang Valley, Narkanda and Kufri
Himachal Tourism lists Solang Nala near Manali, Narkanda and Kufri among its established skiing destinations.
A beginner session teaches you to stand, balance and slide a little. A structured course is a longer commitment where you actually learn to control your turns and stops.
Skiing only works when the snow is skiable, the equipment works and a suitable instructor is available. All three must line up on your date.
Before you pay, ask whether the lesson price covers skis, boots and the instructor, and how long the session really lasts. Do not expect skiing at Rohtang in winter.
Snowboarding in Manali
You can find snowboarding at selected operating activity areas around Solang, not at every snow point.
First timers need boots and a board that fit, plus an instructor. Snowboarding is a real sport, not the same as playing in the snow, and you will fall a lot on day one.
Ask the operator directly whether they have snowboards for rent on your date.
Snow Tubing and Sledging
Tubing means you sit in a large inflated tube and slide down a slope. Sledging is similar on a small sled. Both are easy and fun for first time snow visitors.
Look for supervised activity areas around Solang and Kufri. A safe slope has a marked run and a clear flat stopping area at the bottom.
Adults should stay with children the whole time. Ask the specific operator about age rules, because these differ.
Snowmobile Rides
Operators sometimes offer snowmobile rides around Solang and other authorised activity areas. Treat them as a conditional extra, not a fixed item.
Fresh snowfall does not mean the snowmobiles will run. Confirm the total price, the actual ride time, the route, how many passengers can ride and what safety gear you get.
Ice Skating in Shimla
Shimla has a natural open air ice skating rink. The season usually starts in December and lasts until February, but only when the ice holds up.
Himachal Tourism describes morning and evening sessions and skates on offer. Reconfirm current hours, skate rental and fees before you go.
Timing tip: if the rink runs a morning session, go then. Cold mornings usually keep the ice firmer than later in the day.
Gondola and Ropeway Experiences
The ropeway at Solang Valley suits anyone who wants mountain views without strapping on skis. Older parents often enjoy this more than snow sports.
Wind, weather, maintenance and operator decisions can all stop it. Ask for the current return ticket rate and whether snow activities at the top cost extra.
Guided Winter Walks and Snow Trekking
A short snow walk on a safe, accessible trail is very different from a winter trek on exposed high ground.
Himachal Tourism notes that weather on Triund can change fast and snowstorms can happen. The same applies to Prashar Lake, Kheerganga and other trails people love in summer.
Ice, buried terrain, avalanche exposure and sudden storms turn familiar routes dangerous. For anything serious, hire an authorised guide and carry proper gear.
Igloo Experiences and Winter Stays
Some travel operators have offered igloo style stays and snow camping around Sethan near Manali when conditions allow.
A daytime visit is very different from sleeping out in winter. Before booking a night, confirm road access, heating, bedding, toilets, meals and emergency arrangements. Specific operators, prices and dates need checking.
Paragliding and Other Weather Dependent Adventures
Bir-Billing in Kangra and Solang Valley are recognised paragliding locations. That does not mean flights take off every winter day.
Safe winds, clear visibility, operator authorisation and local permissions decide whether anyone flies. Book only with an authorised operator and keep a backup plan.
If you want to base yourself near most of these activities, our Manali winter tour packages keep Solang within easy reach.
Where Are the Best Places for Winter Activities in Himachal Pradesh?

Each place gives you a different kind of winter. They do not share the same snow chances or the same activity setup.
Manali and Solang Valley
Manali works well as a base. You get hotels, sightseeing and food, and Solang sits about 13 to 14 km away for skiing and snow activities.
When snow plans fall through, you still have Mall Road, Hidimba Devi Temple and plenty of cafés in town.
Our chai tip: on a cold evening, walk Manali's Mall Road and warm up with chai and local food from the stalls and cafés there. It beats paying hotel room service prices.
Shimla, Kufri and Narkanda
Shimla gives you heritage walks and skating. Kufri focuses on fun snow activities. Narkanda has a long skiing tradition.
The Himalayan Nature Park at Kufri sits about 16 km from Shimla. Narkanda is about 65 km from Shimla.
Fresh snow can block the same roads you need for sightseeing. A 16 km drive can turn into a long wait. Browse our Shimla tour packages if you want this region as your base.
Sissu and Lahaul
You can reach Lahaul through the Atal Tunnel when authorities allow traffic and the route is safe.
In April 2026, the Lahaul-Spiti administration marked avalanche risk zones near the tunnel's north portal. The reported rules restricted unauthorized tourist entry, stopping and parking there.
Permission to drive through the tunnel does not mean permission to stop or enter restricted spots. Skip the roadside photo stop near the north portal. It is not worth the risk.
Sissu's gram panchayat also suspended tourism activity from 20 January to 28 February 2026 for religious observances. Whether this repeats in 2027 needs checking.
If Lahaul opens up for your dates, our Sissu tour packages show how we usually plan it.
Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj and Bir
This region gives you monasteries, cafés, culture and views of the Dhauladhar range. It suits travellers who want a calm winter without chasing snow sports.
Bir-Billing paragliding works only when the weather permits. High treks near Dharamshala are not a casual walk in icy winter.
For trip ideas around here, see our Dharamshala tour packages.
Jibhi, Tirthan Valley and Dalhousie
Jibhi and Tirthan suit people who want quiet village stays, short walks and home style food. The higher Jalori Pass road needs special confirmation during snowfall.
Dalhousie pairs well with Khajjiar, about 22 km away. Dalhousie gives you heritage streets, churches, handicraft shopping and viewpoints.
A pretty destination does not mean every road and attraction stays open. Check before you go. Our Jibhi and Tirthan Valley trips suit slower winter travellers.
Winter Spiti Valley
Winter Spiti is for well prepared travellers. Do not treat it as a quick add on to a Manali holiday.
The Shimla to Kinnaur route via Sumdo is the main approach toward Kaza. The district lists this as about 412 km and roughly 20 hours of driving, without an overnight halt, and winter can stretch that.
The Kinnaur administration also issued traffic notices for NH-05 at Nathpa during 2026, including one dated 5 September. Check current status.
The Keylong to Kaza route over Kunzum normally closes for the season, broadly from October or November to June or July. So Chandratal, Kunzum and the full Manali to Kaza circuit are not January sightseeing.
If you have the time and preparation, look at our Spiti Valley tour packages for how a proper winter plan works.
Which Month Is Best for Winter Activities in Himachal?

December 2026
December brings a festive feel, Christmas and New Year crowds, and a chance of snow at higher places. Snow in town centres stays uncertain.
Media reports from 12 October 2026 described early snow in higher Lahaul-Spiti and Kullu, including near Rohtang. That does not tell you what December will bring.
Winter festivals may happen, but check 2026-27 dates closer to the time.
January 2027
January usually gives settled snow at suitable higher locations. That makes it a good month for snow activities.
It can also bring heavy snowfall, blocked approaches and sudden cancellations. Nobody can predict a snowfall date for you.
February 2027
February often keeps good snow cover at higher places, and seasonal activities can continue. Skating, skiing and ropeways still depend on weather and operators.
March may leave some snow at high elevations, but do not treat it like peak winter.
How Much Do Winter Activities in Himachal Cost in 2026-27?

There is no official price list for most of these activities. Private operators set rates, and they change.
Published Solang Price Benchmarks
In September 2026, an operator published indicative Solang prices. It listed ₹800 to ₹1,500 for an intro skiing session with gear and basic instruction.
It listed ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 for snowboarding and ₹700 to ₹900 for a ropeway return ticket. These are third party estimates, not winter 2026-27 quotes.
The same guide describes general entry to Solang as free, with activities charged separately.
Tubing and Snowmobile Prices Vary Too Much
Online sources quote different ranges for tubing and snowmobiles. We will not pretend one of them is correct.
Ask for a written quote for the exact operator, route and ride time.
How to Compare Two Quotes
Clothing rental, instruction, transfers, meals, hotels and parking can all cost extra. A cheap quote often leaves these out.
Money saving tip: put both quotes side by side and add the missing items to the cheaper one. Often the inclusive quote comes out the same or lower, with fewer surprises at the slope.
What Should You Check Before Booking Snow Activities in Himachal?
Is the Activity Actually Operating?
Ask the operator to confirm the activity for your exact travel date. Check again a day or two before you leave.
An open road does not mean the activity runs. Snow on the ground does not mean the slope is safe.
Is the Operator Authorised and Properly Equipped?
Himachal Tourism advises using government authorised adventure operators and registered guides, following safety rules and using proper protective gear.
Ask about instructor training, equipment condition, emergency plans and helmets or other gear. Do not assume every operator carries insurance or rescue backup.
Safety warning: if someone on the roadside offers you a deal far cheaper than published ranges like ₹700 to ₹900 for a ropeway return, ask exactly what you get. Unclear deals often mean missing gear or unauthorised operators.
What Does the Price Include?
Clarify equipment, instruction, clothing, transport, taxes, session length and extra charges. Get it in writing before you send any advance.
Not every package includes paid snow activities, including ours. Ask what your booking covers.
What Happens if the Activity Gets Cancelled?
Weather and safety can cancel any snow activity. Ask whether you get a refund, a new slot or an alternative.
Each supplier sets its own rules. Confirm them before you pay.
Is the Hotel Accessible and Properly Heated?
Ask what heating the room has, how long it runs and whether it costs extra. Ask about power backup and whether vehicles can reach the hotel after snow.
Families with kids or older parents usually do better on a practical basis than a remote stay that can get cut off.
Are Rohtang Pass, Sissu, Atal Tunnel and Winter Spiti Accessible?

Rohtang Pass in Winter
Rohtang, about 51 km from Manali, usually closes around late November due to snow. The exact closure date for Rohtang Pass in 2026 will depend on snowfall, road conditions and official safety restrictions.
Travellers planning a visit in late November or December should check the latest road advisories and permit availability before including Rohtang in their itinerary. Even if limited vehicle movement is permitted, tourist access may remain restricted.
In December 2025, authorities kept restricted 4×4 access open until 28 December because conditions allowed it. Treat that as an exception, not a promise for 2026.
You need a tourist vehicle permit from rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in when tourism access opens. A permit does not override a road closure. For the reopening season, read our Rohtang Pass in March road and snow guide.
Atal Tunnel and Sissu
Driving through the Atal Tunnel is a different route from crossing Rohtang Pass. Remember the April 2026 avalanche zone restrictions near the north portal.
Sissu paused tourism from 20 January to 28 February 2026. Check 2027 rules before planning.
Winter Spiti and Official Sources
The district route guide describes the seasonal Kunzum closure and the Kinnaur approach to Spiti, subject to road conditions.
The district's road status page still showed a May 2024 update when we checked, so do not rely on it alone. Check district notices, police orders and IMD Shimla forecasts at mausam.imd.gov.in/shimla before you leave.
Which Winter Activities Are Best for Families, Couples and Adventure Seekers?

Families With Children
Pick supervised snow play, the ropeway when it runs, easy sightseeing and a hotel with reliable heating.
Never let kids sledge on open roadside slopes. Traffic and hidden edges make them dangerous. Not every activity suits every child, so ask each operator.
Couples and Honeymooners
Viewpoints, cafés, heritage walks and quiet village stays make a relaxed couple's trip. Add a beginner snow activity if you both want one.
Choose a comfortable base so you are not spending your holiday in a car. Nobody can promise snow on your honeymoon dates.
Adventure Lovers
Ski lessons, selected snowboarding and professionally guided winter treks give you a real challenge.
Your experience, gear, the weather and route difficulty decide what suits you. A tubing run and a technical winter trek are not the same kind of adventure.
What Should You Pack and How Can You Stay Safe?
Pack thermal layers, a waterproof outer jacket, winter shoes with good grip, warm gloves, a cap or head cover, sunglasses and sunscreen.
Footwear matters most. Packed snow and icy paths around Mall Roads and temple steps catch people out in regular sneakers.
Carry your personal medicines and enough warm clothing for cold evenings. Follow weather warnings and local driving rules, and keep away from exposed snow slopes.
Check IMD Shimla for official forecasts. Keep your itinerary loose enough to shift a day.
How Can You Plan a 3, 5 or 7 Day Himachal Winter Trip?

These are suggested structures, not fixed schedules or prices.
3 Day Shimla Winter Escape
Base yourself in Shimla. Walk the Ridge and Mall Road, try skating if the rink runs, and plan Kufri only if roads permit.
The Kalka-Shimla railway, a UNESCO World Heritage line, makes a lovely way to arrive when it runs. Keep snow plans optional and town sightseeing as your backup.
5 Day Manali Snow Activity Holiday
Spend two days on Manali sightseeing and one on Solang activities if they operate. Add Lahaul only when permissions and roads allow.
Keep one day free for rest or weather delays. Do not count on Sissu, Rohtang or every paid activity.
7 Day Relaxed Himachal Winter Holiday
Combine Dharamshala and Dalhousie for monasteries, heritage streets, viewpoints and short outdoor walks when conditions allow.
What Can You Do if Snow Activities Are Cancelled?
In Shimla, walk the Ridge and Mall Road and see the heritage buildings. In Manali, visit Hidimba Devi Temple and settle into a café.
Around Dharamshala, spend time at monasteries and cultural spots. Even these backups need to suit the weather on the day.
Our team recommends booking with flexible plans and clear cancellation terms. Pick activities that match the real season, not the photos online, and your winter trip will feel easy instead of stressful.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best things to do in Himachal Pradesh in winter?
Skiing, snowboarding, ice skating in Shimla, supervised snow play, ropeway rides at Solang and guided winter walks. Each depends on local snow, weather and operator conditions on your date, so confirm before paying.
Which is the best place for snow activities in Himachal?
Solang Valley, about 13 to 14 km from Manali, is the most established option. Kufri near Shimla offers recreational snow play, while Narkanda has a long skiing tradition. Pick based on your base and travel style.
Which month is best for snowfall in Himachal Pradesh?
December to February is the main winter period. January and February usually give better chances of settled snow at higher places. Nobody can guarantee snowfall on a specific date, so stay flexible.
Is Solang Valley open in December and January?
Reaching Solang and finding activities open are separate things. Bad weather can restrict access, and each activity runs only when conditions allow. Confirm both road access and your specific activity close to your travel date.
Can beginners try skiing in Himachal Pradesh?
Yes. Solang, Narkanda and Kufri are recognised skiing locations. Beginners need a trained instructor and properly fitted equipment. Ask what the session covers and how long it lasts before you pay.
Which are the best winter treks in Himachal?
Suitability depends on current trail, weather and safety conditions. Routes like Triund can face snowstorms and fast weather changes. Beginners should stick to short, safe snow walks or hire authorised guides.
Which hill stations are best to visit in Himachal in winter?
Manali, Shimla, Kufri, Narkanda, Dharamshala and Dalhousie all work, but they feel different. Manali and Kufri suit snow play, Shimla suits heritage and skating, and Dharamshala and Dalhousie suit slower cultural trips.
Which places should I visit in Himachal in December?
Choose an accessible base like Shimla, Manali or Dharamshala. December snowfall stays uncertain, especially in town centres, so pick a place with enough non snow things to enjoy if the weather does not cooperate.
Is Rohtang Pass open during winter?
Rohtang usually closes around late November. In December 2025, authorities allowed restricted 4×4 access until 28 December as an exception. Check official orders for 2026, because a permit cannot override a closure.
Is Sissu accessible through the Atal Tunnel in winter?
Tunnel traffic, local road rules and tourism permission are three separate things. Sissu paused tourism from 20 January to 28 February 2026. Check 2027 rules and avalanche zone restrictions before planning.
How much do winter activities in Himachal cost?
Prices vary by operator. A September 2026 guide listed ₹800 to ₹1,500 for intro skiing and ₹700 to ₹900 for Solang's ropeway return. These are not guaranteed winter 2026-27 rates.
What happens if snowfall cancels my booked activity?
It depends on your supplier. Some offer refunds, some reschedule, some suggest alternatives. Get these terms in writing before you pay any advance, and keep a backup activity planned.
