The Manali to Kaza road through Kunzum Pass is closed in winter. That is not your December route. You come in from the Shimla side, and it takes days, not hours.

Even the Shimla side is not guaranteed every single day. After heavy snowfall, sections can close temporarily. So "open in winter" means the route generally works, not that the road is clear on demand on your exact date.

Forget everything you have seen from summer Spiti trips. December is a different place.

Your sightseeing windows are short. The sun sets early, the cold rolls in fast, and you do not want to be on a mountain road after dark. You plan your day around a few useful daylight hours.

Tourist services shrink hard. Many cafés, shops and homestays close for the season. Plumbing freezes in a lot of properties. Local village roads open and close with the weather.

In our experience, the biggest mistake travellers make with winter Spiti is treating an "open road" as a guaranteed road. Early December and deep winter are also not the same thing. 

Early in the month you might still catch cold, dry, snowless landscapes. As the month goes on, winter usually settles in harder.

Think of a December Spiti trip as a flexible, expedition-style road journey. Not a checklist holiday.

How Cold Is Kaza and Spiti Valley in December?

Daytime conditions

I will be honest with you here. Sources disagree so much on exact daytime numbers that I am not going to hand you a false precise range.

What I can tell you reliably is that daytime often stays below freezing. And direct sun versus shade makes a huge difference. 

Standing in the sun at noon can feel almost pleasant. Step into a shaded lane and the cold bites back instantly. 

Exact daytime averages for December vary between sources, so it is better to plan for generally sub-zero daytime conditions rather than rely on one fixed temperature range.

Night-time conditions

Nights are the real test. The Lahaul and Spiti district administration says winter temperatures can fall to around −20°C. That is cold enough to freeze water inside a room.

You will see blogs throwing around −30°C as if it were normal. Do not plan your head around that number. 

Temperatures around −30°C can occur during severe cold spells, but they should not be treated as normal or guaranteed night-time conditions throughout December. 

Wind, altitude and the specific weather system that week can all push conditions to feel more severe than the thermometer suggests.

And no one can tell you your exact December 2026 night temperature months ahead. Anyone who claims to is guessing.

Will There Definitely Be Snow in Spiti in December 2026?

No. Nobody can guarantee live snowfall or a specific depth of snow for a future date. Let me break down what is realistic by part of the month.

Early December

This depends entirely on when the season's first storms arrive. Some years, early December is widely white. Other years it is patchy snow, or mostly cold, dry, brown mountains with snow only on the high peaks.

Mid December

Winter usually becomes more established as the month moves on. More chance of snow on the ground. But I still cannot promise you a snowfall on the 15th or any other date.

Late December

Deeper winter conditions become more likely late in the month. So does disruption. More snow raises the odds of a temporary road closure catching your plans.

One thing worth separating clearly. Seeing accumulated snow lying on the ground is common in a Spiti winter. Actually witnessing live snowfall while you are standing there is luck, not a booking guarantee.

Which Road Is Open to Spiti in December?

Shimla to Kaza via Kinnaur

This is your winter route. The district administration lists Shimla to Kaza as 412 km and describes the journey as roughly 20 hours excluding one overnight halt. They call it an almost all weather road up to Kaza.

Please read that 20 hours correctly. It does not mean you drive 20 hours straight. That would be dangerous and exhausting in winter. You break it into sensible overnight stages.

The broad progression runs from Shimla through Kinnaur, then Sumdo, Tabo and finally Kaza. I am not going to invent segment distances for you, but that is the order you move through.

Can Travellers Reach Kaza from Manali in December?

No, not by the normal Manali to Kaza road through Kunzum Pass. That route is shut for winter.

The district administration states plainly that the Keylong to Kaza road closes in winter because of Kunzum Pass and heavy snowfall. Kunzum sits at about 4,550 to 4,551 metres, and it stays buried.

Here is a point that confuses a lot of people. The Atal Tunnel keeps parts of Lahaul reachable in winter. That is true. 

But it does not open Kunzum Pass, and it does not get you to Kaza. Do not mix up the Manali and Shimla routes. For December, Shimla side is the answer.

What Happens After Fresh Snowfall?

Even on the winter approach, fresh snow can trigger temporary closures and icy stretches. The road can be fine on Monday and blocked by Tuesday afternoon.

Live road conditions can change quickly after fresh snowfall, so the latest status should always be checked close to departure and again during the journey.

Is a 4x4 Compulsory for Spiti in December?

No verified government rule in front of me says every December traveller must legally use a 4x4. So I will not tell you it is compulsory, because that would be a made-up claim.

What is true is that once snow falls, traction matters enormously. Suitable winter tyres or chains where appropriate, good ground clearance, and above all a driver who knows winter mountain roads become the things that actually keep you safe.

Here is the honest bit

An inexperienced tourist in a shiny 4x4 can be far less prepared than an experienced local driver in a well-set-up vehicle. The machine is not magic. The driving is.

For most people coming for a holiday, my straight advice is to use a driver or operator who knows this exact route in winter. It is not about capability marketing. It is about survival margins on ice.

What Actually Stays Open in Spiti in December?

Before I go village by village, hold onto three different ideas. "The village exists and people live there" is one thing. "The road to it is open today" is a second thing. "A tourist service there is actually running" is a third. They do not always line up.

Kaza

Kaza is your most practical winter base. It has the most that keeps functioning through the cold.

Some accommodation stays open. But which specific hotels, cafés and shops are running on your dates is something you confirm before you go, not assume.

Tabo

Tabo stays inhabited and remains an important religious centre through winter. You pass through it on the way in.

I cannot promise you that every guesthouse or tourist facility there is open in December. Confirm your specific stay.

Key Monastery

Key Monastery is a working, living religious institution, so it does not "close." But whether you can reach it depends entirely on the winter road that day.

Kibber and Chicham

Think of these as possible day excursions when the local road is clear. The famous Chicham bridge and Kibber village are wonderful, but they are weather dependent, not fixed guaranteed stops.

Langza, Hikkim and Komic

These are high villages, and their approach roads are very weather dependent in winter. Our team recommends keeping village sightseeing flexible rather than pre-promising Komic, Hikkim or Kibber on a fixed date. Say "if road conditions permit" and mean it.

Dhankar and Pin Valley

Treat both as conditional and weather dependent. I am not going to promise you Pin Valley as a clean December sightseeing stop, because winter access there is not something to bank on.

Chandratal and Kunzum Pass

Leave Chandratal off your December plan entirely. It sits about 21 km from Kunzum Pass, and the Kunzum road is closed for winter. There is no normal December road itinerary that includes the lake.

What Are Winter Hotels and Homestays Really Like?

Some properties run all winter. Many tourist-focused ones simply shut for the season. Your job is to confirm, property by property, before paying.

One real example. Homestays of India currently lists a Kaza homestay that says it stays open in winter, and that listing advertises running hot water. 

The exact facilities available can vary by property and season, so confirm heating, hot water, meals and winter operation directly with the homestay for your travel dates before booking.

Heating

Winter properties may use a bukhari stove, a fireplace, electric blankets, or some mix. Do not assume every bedroom is heated. A crucial question: is the heating inside your bedroom, or only in a shared common room? That changes your whole night.

Hot water

Some stays give you bucket hot water because pipes freeze. That is normal here, not bad service. Do not expect a geyser and unlimited hot showers. Ask specifically.

Toilets and running water

Frozen pipes can mean limited running water, and some winter properties use dry or composting toilets. This is not true of every place, so do not panic. But ask directly so you are not surprised at midnight in −15 cold.

Questions to Ask Your Homestay Before Paying

Before you send any money, get clear answers in plain language. Ask whether the property is definitely operating on your exact dates. Ask what heating is provided and whether it is in the bedroom or only a shared space. 

Ask if running water is working, and whether the toilet is flush or dry. Ask if hot water comes by bucket or geyser. 

Ask whether breakfast and dinner are included, since eating out options shrink in winter. And ask what happens to your booking if roads close and you arrive late or cannot arrive at all.

A Realistic Spiti December 2026 Itinerary

This is a conservative sample, not a promise. Every sightseeing day below is weather dependent, and I mean that seriously.

Day 1: Reach Shimla

Arrive, rest, sort out warm gear and any last supplies. A calm start beats a rushed one.

Day 2: Shimla to Kinnaur

Move during practical daylight hours only. I will not invent a driving time for you. You go steadily and stop before dark.

Day 3: Kinnaur to Tabo

Keep climbing gradually toward Spiti. Do not cram sightseeing into a travel day.

Day 4: Tabo to Kaza

Reach Kaza and settle in. Get warm, eat well, sleep.

Day 5: Kaza acclimatisation and light local sightseeing

Keep this deliberately gentle. You are at real altitude and it is cold. Acclimatising helps, but it does not cancel altitude risk, so take it slow.

Day 6: Key, Kibber and Chicham if roads permit

If the road is clear, do this loop. If it is blocked, stay around Kaza or visit a nearer monastery. Have that backup ready in your head.

Day 7: Langza, Hikkim and Komic if roads permit

Same rule. Beautiful if open, skipped without drama if not. A weather backup, not a guarantee.

Day 8: Buffer day in Kaza

Day 9: Begin return toward Tabo or Kinnaur

Start heading back down in stages.

Day 10: Continue toward Shimla

Keep the return unhurried and daylight-bound.

Day 11: Extra weather buffer or departure

Do not book a tight flight or train right after a winter Spiti drive. Give yourself this cushion. Eleven days is not compulsory, it is just a safe sample shape.

Should You Self Drive to Spiti in December?

Only if you genuinely have snow and mountain driving experience. This is not the place to learn.

You are dealing with black ice, fresh snow, short daylight, long remote stretches with no help, and conditions that flip within hours. Black ice especially catches confident drivers off guard.

If that is not your background, use a winter-experienced local driver. It is the single biggest safety upgrade you can make on this trip.

What Should You Pack for Spiti in December?

Layers save you here. Start with thermal base layers, top and bottom, worn close to the skin. Add insulated mid layers like a good fleece or down. Finish with a windproof and waterproof outer shell, because wind does more damage than still cold.

On your feet, wear insulated, waterproof footwear with grip, not fashion sneakers. Bring warm gloves, and proper head and face protection for the wind. 

Carry sunglasses, high SPF sunscreen and lip protection, because the winter sun and snow glare burn you faster than you expect.

Pack a good thermos for hot drinks, a torch or headlamp, and power banks, since cold drains batteries fast.

Who Should and Shouldn't Visit Spiti in December?

December Spiti suits you if you are relaxed about changing plans, genuinely fine with hard cold, happy with simple stays, and okay if a day's sightseeing gets cancelled by weather. If that is you, the silence and emptiness up there are unlike anything.

It is the wrong season for you if you want a fixed sightseeing checklist ticked off, luxury comfort, snowfall delivered on demand, or a tightly timed schedule.

Is December Better Than Other Months for Spiti?

Not better or worse, just very different. December gives you solitude, empty roads, a whole valley almost to yourself, and a raw local winter you will never see in July.
