What Is Manali Famous for Buying?

The headline product is the Kullu shawl and everything in its family: stoles, mufflers, and handloom woollens. These come in different fibres and finishes, and the price gap between them is huge, which is exactly why people get confused.

After that come Himachali caps, Tibetan-style handicrafts, jewellery, small decorative items, woollen accessories like gloves and socks, and some packaged regional food products.

Here is what most tourists get wrong

Something being sold in Manali is not the same as something being made in Himachal. Plenty of woollens on display are brought in from outside and simply sold under the "Kullu" name. The word on the label tells you the style, not the origin.

Worth knowing: Kullu Shawl is a registered Geographical Indication, which means the name is legally protected for genuine products from the region. 

There is also a 2026 development around the Himachali Cap being registered as a GI. That does not mean every cap in the market is GI-certified. It just means the genuine article now has legal backing.

Where Should You Shop in Manali?

Mall Road

Mall Road is the easiest central stretch for comparing woollens, handicrafts, gifts, food products, and general souvenirs without walking all over town. If you only have a couple of hours, this is where you start.

Mall Road is primarily pedestrian, and ordinary vehicles are not allowed on the main shopping stretch, so you can browse at your own pace.

On timings, be careful with what you read online. Published estimates for closing time range anywhere from around 7 PM to 10 PM, and they conflict. Individual shops keep their own hours. Check locally on the day rather than trusting a fixed number.

Bhuttico

Bhuttico is a handloom cooperative brand that says it was founded in 1944. It officially lists a Manali showroom on Mall Road.

The Government of India's India Handloom Brand directory also lists Bhuttico outlets in Manali at Hadimba Road opposite PNB/The Mall and at Manu Market/The Mall Road.

In our experience, Bhuttico is most useful as a benchmark. Walk in first, see what genuine handloom material feels like, note the price levels, and then you know what you are comparing against elsewhere. 

It is not always the cheapest option, but it gives you a reliable reference point when provenance matters to you.

Manu Market

Manu Market is a central spot for practical shopping: clothing, woollens, footwear, and souvenirs. It is busy and useful for everyday buys.

If you are spending real money on a textile here, compare materials and labels carefully. Do not assume every woollen on the rack is locally handwoven just because it is sitting in a Manali market.

Tibetan Market

The Tibetan Market is your place for Tibetan-style decorative pieces, prayer flags, jewellery, incense, woollen accessories, and smaller gifts.

Bargaining may be possible at independent stalls here. We will not promise you a fixed discount or a magic percentage, because that varies from stall to stall. Compare a few before you commit.

Old Manali Market

Old Manali leans more towards boho clothing, quirky accessories, T-shirts, small handmade-style goods, and relaxed browsing. It has a completely different vibe from the main market.

One honest caution: this is not the place to verify an expensive Kullu handloom product. Come here for casual clothing and atmosphere, not for a premium textile purchase.

Is Mall Road the Best Place for Shopping in Manali?

Yes and no. Mall Road is the most convenient place to compare many categories in one area. It is not automatically the best seller for every single product.

Think of it simply. Mall Road wins on convenience and variety. A recognised cooperative or certified handloom seller is more useful when provenance is the thing you care about. 

Tibetan Market is better for small decorative souvenirs. Old Manali is better for bohemian clothing and casual browsing.

Our team recommends one habit above all: compare several shops before you buy an expensive woollen. The first quote is rarely the only quote.

Where Should You Buy a Genuine Kullu Shawl in Manali?

Start with what the law says. Kullu Shawl is GI registered under application number 19, and the main registration is valid up to 9 December 2034.

There is also a registered Kullu Shawl logo under application 383, valid up to 22 May 2032, and its GI registry record includes renewal details dated 2 March 2026. So the protection is active and current.

A recognised cooperative such as Bhuttico is one verifiable option in Manali when you want documented provenance. It is not the only genuine seller in town, so do not treat it as the only door.

Whoever you buy from, ask the same questions. What fibre is this? Is it handloom or powerloom? Who produced it? Does it carry a GI or Handloom Mark label? Can you give me a proper bill? A confident, honest seller answers all five without flinching.

How Can You Tell If a Kullu Shawl Is Genuine?

Check the GI and Handloom Mark first

The Government of India's Handloom Mark scheme exists to assure buyers that a product is genuinely handwoven, not powerloom or mill-made. Government handloom systems also use label verification, including QR-based checks in relevant schemes.

That said, we are not going to claim that every authentic Kullu shawl in every shop carries every possible certification. A label is strong evidence when it is there. Its absence alone is not automatic proof of a fake.

Ask what fibre you are buying

This is where price really comes from. Woollen products differ a lot by fibre. The materials you will hear about are polywool, merino wool, angora and wool blends, and pashmina-containing products.

Do not let anyone call a shawl pure pashmina unless the verified product information actually says so. In our experience, travellers find it easier to compare quality once they ask about the fibre first and the price second.

Inspect the weave, but do not rely on one internet trick

You will find plenty of blog tricks about flipping the shawl and reading the reverse side. Here is the honest truth: published sources conflict on this.

Some guides say a genuine Kullu shawl shows visible extra-weft characteristics or slight irregularities on the back. Other handloom guidance says a well-made slit-tapestry reverse can look almost like the front, without long loose floating threads.

So the reverse side can give you clues, but it is not a conclusive authenticity test. Certification, fibre labelling, seller provenance, and an invoice are safer checks. And please do not do a fibre burn test inside a shop.

Treat an unbelievable price as a warning, not proof

A polywool Kullu shawl is listed at ₹1,999. Several handwoven pure merino Kullu shawls sit around ₹2,999 to ₹4,799. Current angora and wool examples include ₹2,149 and ₹3,299. 

A specific pure merino Kullu shawl is listed at ₹5,500. And men's pashmina plus merino/wool Kullu shawl examples are listed at ₹9,500.

Read those numbers as a ladder. Polywool at the bottom, pure merino in the middle, pashmina blends at the top. If someone quotes you a "pure pashmina Kullu shawl" for a few hundred rupees, that gap should make you pause.
