What Is the Best 6 Day Shimla Manali Itinerary?

This is the highlights version. Every day earns its place, and nothing wastes your time.

Day 1: Arrive in Shimla and Explore The Ridge and Mall Road

Keep arrival day light. You will likely reach Shimla after a long journey from Delhi or Chandigarh, and altitude plus tiredness is a bad combination for a packed schedule.

If you land with daylight to spare, walk The Ridge, step into Christ Church and stroll Mall Road. If you arrive late, just eat well and sleep. The hills are not going anywhere.

One local tip. Skip the pricey cafes on Mall Road for your first proper meal and walk down to the Indian Coffee House on Mall Road instead. 

The dosa and cold coffee are cheap, the waiters in their fan tail turbans are part of the charm, and it is a genuine Shimla institution rather than a tourist trap.

Day 2: Shimla, Kufri and Jakhoo

Today you spread out. Kufri sits about 16 km from Shimla as listed by Himachal Tourism, and its Himalayan Nature Park is the honest reason to go, not the overpriced pony rides.

Here is a warning worth taking seriously. Kufri gets swarmed in peak season, and touts push horse rides and photo props hard. If someone quotes a ride price, agree on the exact number before you sit on the horse, not after.

Then head to Jakhoo Temple, which the tourism board lists as 2.5 km via The Ridge or 6 km via Circular Road, sitting up on Jakhoo Hill at 2,445 metres. Watch your snacks and glasses around the monkeys. They are quick and they are not shy.

Do not try to add Narkanda or another far excursion on this compact plan. It only turns a relaxed day into a rushed one.

Day 3: Shimla to Manali

This is your transfer day, and we mean it. Himachal Tourism lists Shimla at 260 km from Manali.

We are not going to quote one guaranteed driving time, because travel duration can vary significantly with traffic, road conditions, weather and seasonal congestion.

Our team recommends starting early, keeping sightseeing off the schedule and treating today as the drive itself.

Break for food, stretch your legs and enjoy the changing valleys. Reach Manali, check in, and rest.

Day 4: Manali Local Sightseeing

An easy, walkable day. Start at Hidimba Devi Temple in its cedar forest, then wander Old Manali for its cafes and slow pace, do Mall Road and visit Vashisht for its hot springs and old temple.

Day 5: Solang Valley, Atal Tunnel and Sissu or Rohtang Pass

This is the big mountain day, and it needs the most care.

You do not get to promise yourself Solang, Atal Tunnel, Sissu and Rohtang all in one day. Pick the practical option based on the season, the weather, live road status and permits.

Solang Valley sits 13 km from Manali and is the easy adventure hub. Rohtang Pass is 51 km from Manali and is seasonal and permit controlled. On days Rohtang is shut or permits run out, the Atal Tunnel to Sissu run is the reliable alternative, and often the prettier drive.

Day 6: Depart Manali

Mostly a travel day. Do not build a fragile flight or train connection right on top of a long mountain road transfer.

Give the drive out room. If a landslide or a slow stretch delays you, you want buffer, not panic. We will not give you one fixed drive time, because the journey can take longer depending on traffic, weather, road conditions and unexpected delays.

What Is the Best 7 Day Shimla Manali Itinerary?

This is our recommended balance for most first timers. The whole point of seven days is to remove the squeeze from the Manali side.

Days 1 and 2: Shimla and Kufri

Two unhurried days in Shimla. Day one settles you into The Ridge, Christ Church and Mall Road. Day two takes in Kufri, 16 km from Shimla, and Jakhoo Temple without racing the clock.

Because you are not rushing, you can actually sit with a coffee, people watch on the Ridge and enjoy the town instead of ticking boxes.

Day 3: Shimla to Manali

A full transfer block, same as before. Shimla to Manali is 260 km per Himachal Tourism, so start early and keep the day light on sightseeing. Our team recommends keeping the Shimla to Manali day light on sightseeing so you arrive with energy left.

Day 4: Manali Local Sightseeing

Hidimba Devi Temple, Old Manali, Mall Road and Vashisht at a comfortable pace. This is a good evening to eat slowly and plan the next two days around the weather forecast.

Day 5: Solang Valley, Atal Tunnel and Sissu

Head out to Solang Valley, 13 km from Manali, and continue through the Atal Tunnel toward Sissu if conditions allow.

We will not guarantee snow. Whether you see it depends entirely on your travel date and elevation. Some travellers arrive expecting white peaks in shoulder season and leave disappointed, so plan for the scenery you will get, not the postcard you imagined.

Day 6: Rohtang Pass or Naggar and a Relaxed Manali Day

Here is where seven days shines. If Rohtang Pass, 51 km from Manali, is open and your permit is sorted, this day can be your Rohtang day.

If Rohtang is shut or permits are gone, do not force it. Swap in a Naggar half day for its castle and old world calm, or just slow down in Manali. This flexible day is the single biggest advantage of the seven day plan.

Day 7: Departure

Your onward journey home. Give it space and do not stack a tight connection behind a long drive. We are not quoting fixed bus or taxi timings here, because they change and you should confirm them for your date.

What Is the Best 8 Day Shimla Manali Itinerary?

Eight days is comfort and flexibility, mostly for families, parents and slower travellers.

Day 1: Arrive Shimla

Light arrival day. Settle in, eat, rest.

Day 2: Shimla and Kufri

The Ridge, Christ Church, Mall Road, then Kufri at 16 km from Shimla and Jakhoo Temple. No rush anywhere.

Day 3: Naldehra or a Slower Shimla Day

Use this optional slower day for Naldehra, listed 23 km from Shimla, with its green golf course and quiet pine slopes. Or just have a genuinely lazy Shimla morning.

This is the kind of day parents and kids remember fondly, because nobody is being dragged anywhere.

Day 4: Shimla to Manali

The transfer block. 260 km, early start, light on sightseeing, easy evening in Manali once you arrive.

Day 5: Manali Local Sightseeing

Hidimba Devi Temple, Old Manali, Mall Road and Vashisht. A relaxed local day to recover from the drive.

Day 6: Solang Valley, Atal Tunnel and Sissu

Solang Valley at 13 km from Manali, then through the Atal Tunnel toward Sissu if road and weather allow.

Day 7: Rohtang Pass, Naggar or Weather Buffer

Treat these as alternatives, not a combined plan. If Rohtang is open and permitted, take it. If not, choose Naggar or hold the day as a weather buffer.

What Route Should You Take From Shimla to Manali?

The regular, practical corridor runs from Shimla toward Bilaspur, then Mandi, then Kullu, and into Manali. This is the road most vehicles use and the one with the most reliable stops for food and fuel.

Alternate routes exist, including hill roads through Jalori and Banjar, but treat them as options that need current road verification before you commit. They are not always the faster or safer choice, and they can close.

What Changed for the Shimla Manali Route in 2026?

The Mandi to Kullu corridor got a real upgrade this year. The Deod and Hanogi tunnels on the Pandoh to Takoli section of NH 3 opened in September 2026, targeting two of the worst congestion points on the way to Manali.

That is good news for a stretch that has jammed for hours in peak season. But do not turn a tunnel opening into a guaranteed Shimla to Manali journey time. The rest of the road still behaves like a mountain road.

One date sensitive detail. As a September 2026 update, reports at opening said one tube of each twin tunnel was running initially, with the second to follow. Conditions may have changed since, so check before you travel.

If you look at the Jalori or Banjar alternative, note another September 2026 update. An official traffic regulation applied at Dhaman on NH 305 from 4 September to 24 September 2026 during Bailey bridge removal. That was a specific, dated restriction, not a permanent one.

Do You Need a Permit for Rohtang Pass in 2026?

Yes, and the system changed, so ignore old blog advice here.

The permit process has moved from the old NIC portal to rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in. If a site sends you to the old portal, it is out of date.

The official portal shows a tourism permit fee of ₹500 for a car or jeep, plus a congestion charge of ₹50 for a car or jeep. Ignore competitor pages claiming ₹800 for petrol or ₹400 for diesel, because those numbers conflict with the government portal.

The portal currently lists a daily quota of 800 petrol vehicles and 400 diesel vehicles, with permit release windows at 10:00 and 16:00, and says permits can be requested for the next two days. You need a valid ID and a valid PUC, and your vehicle registration age must not exceed ten years.

The official portal showed active permit issuance for 14 September 2026, which tells you the system was live in mid September. 

It does not guarantee Rohtang will be open on your future date, so always check close to travel.

What Is the Manali Green Tax in 2026?

The official government portal describes a Composite Environmental Fund that applies to vehicles entering Manali which are not registered in Himachal Pradesh.

The current values are ₹100 for a bike, ₹200 for an LMV, ₹300 for a passenger vehicle and ₹500 for a goods vehicle. The portal says the payment is valid for seven days.

Recheck the official portal before you travel, because fees and policies can change without much notice.

What Is the Best Time for a Shimla Manali Trip?

Spring and Early Summer

This is the popular window, with pleasant hill weather and busy towns. Expect crowds at Kufri, Solang and Mall Road, and book stays early. We will not promise exact temperatures or snow, because both vary year to year.

Monsoon

Rain brings the real risk here. Road delays, closures and landslides are common on these routes during the wet months.

If you travel now, keep the plan loose and check road status daily. A flexible traveller has a fine monsoon trip. A rigid schedule gets punished.

Autumn

Post monsoon is an underrated window. The air clears, the crowds thin and the drives feel calmer. The same road status caution still applies, since early season snow can arrive at higher points.

Winter

Winter is for snow chasers. Lower Shimla and Manali can be beautiful, but high roads face serious disruption.

Never assume Rohtang access in winter. The pass is closed for much of it, and no permit changes the weather.

How Should Families and Travellers With Parents Adjust This Itinerary?

Pick the seven or eight day version when comfort matters. The extra day buys rest, and rest is what keeps older travellers and kids happy.

How Can You Reach Shimla and Return From Manali?

By air

Shimla Airport at Jubbarhatti is listed by Himachal Tourism as 23 km from Shimla, and Bhuntar Airport is 50 km from Manali. Both are small airports, so flights can be limited and weather sensitive.

By train

The Kalka Shimla railway is a UNESCO World Heritage mountain railway, and the Himachal Tourism page describes 102 tunnels along the route. It is slow, and that is the whole charm. 

A local money saving tip, book the ordinary classes well ahead rather than paying a premium later, since seats sell out fast in season.

By bus

HRTC currently lists Shimla to Manali, Shimla to Delhi, Manali to Delhi and Manali to Chandigarh among its bookable routes. Do not trust old third party departure times or fares floating around online. Check the HRTC booking portal for your actual travel date.

Common Shimla Manali Itinerary Mistakes

The biggest one is adding too many destinations. Kasol, Dharamshala and Spiti each pull the trip in a different direction and turn a relaxed plan into a driving marathon.

Close behind is treating the Shimla to Manali transfer like a quick hop. It is a 260 km mountain drive that deserves its own day. Underestimate it and every day after runs late.

Many travellers also assume Rohtang and Sissu must both appear in every itinerary. They don't. On any given day, weather and permits decide, and a good trip has a backup plan built in.

Then there is the permit trap, relying on old Rohtang prices or the retired portal. Use rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in and the current fees, not last year's numbers.

Finally, do not book an overly tight onward connection after a long mountain road journey. Give the drive out real buffer, or one delay can cost you a flight.
