Shimla First or Manali First? Best Himachal Route from Delhi & Chandigarh in 2026

Manali16 minutes read
Shimla First or Manali First

You already know you want both Shimla and Manali. The real question keeping you stuck is the order. Do you drive up to Shimla first, or push straight to Manali and loop back?

This is not about which town is prettier. Both earn their place on a first Himachal trip. This is about road planning, which is where most people quietly mess up their holiday before it even starts.

Get the sequence right and your trip flows. Get it wrong and you spend your best morning energy stuck in a car for ten hours, arriving too wrecked to enjoy anything.

So let's settle it properly, with real distances and honest road talk.

Quick Answer

For most first-time travellers from Delhi or Chandigarh, do Shimla first and Manali second.

Shimla gives you a much shorter arrival drive, so your first day on the road stays sane. From Chandigarh it's only about 119 km. That's a gentle start instead of a marathon.

The exception: if you can leave Chandigarh very early and you want to finish your trip in Shimla, Manali first works well. This helps when you have an early flight or train on your last day, because you end up closer to the plains.

Shimla First or Manali First in 2026?

Shimla First or Manali First in 2026

Why Shimla First Works for Most First-Time Travellers

Here's the simple maths that decides it.

Delhi to Shimla is officially about 370 km and around 8 hours by car under normal hill-driving conditions. Chandigarh to Shimla is about 119 km and around 3.5 hours.

Now compare Manali. Himachal Tourism places it roughly 530 to 550 km from Delhi and about 300 km from Chandigarh.

Recent 2026 travel estimates commonly place the Delhi to Manali road journey at around 10 to 13 hours, depending on traffic, road conditions, stops and your exact starting point in Delhi.

See the gap? Your first road day to Shimla is dramatically shorter, especially from Chandigarh.

This matters more than people think. You've probably already flown or taken a train into Delhi or Chandigarh. You're tired before the hills even begin. Piling a 12-hour mountain drive on top of that travel fatigue is how good trips start badly.

What most tourists get wrong is treating the arrival day like a formality. They think the holiday starts when they reach the hills. It doesn't. The drive up is the holiday too, and a shorter first drive means you actually enjoy your first evening instead of collapsing into bed.

In our experience, the order matters less than where you place the longest road day. Shimla first simply pushes your hardest driving to the middle of the trip, when you're rested and used to the roads.

When Manali First Is Actually the Better Choice

Shimla first is not a rule. It's a default.

If you can leave Chandigarh very early, tackling Manali first is completely reasonable. The reason to do it is what happens at the end of your trip.

Finish in Shimla and you're only about 119 km from Chandigarh on your final morning. Compare that to ending in Manali, where you face the long 300 km transfer back to Chandigarh on the day you're trying to catch a flight or train.

That's the real advantage. Reversing the circuit doesn't magically cut hundreds of kilometres off your total drive. What it does is move the longest drive away from your departure day, where a delay could cost you a booking.

Our team usually recommends Shimla first when guests reach Chandigarh after breakfast or lunch. But if your flight home is at 8 AM the next day, ending in Shimla is the smarter play.

Is Shimla First Better Because of Altitude?

21 Best Things to Do in Shimla in 2026_ Local Guide, Costs and Itineraries.jpg

The Altitude Myth

Here's where a lot of blogs get it plain wrong.

You'll read that you should do Shimla first because it's lower, so your body "acclimatises" before Manali. It sounds logical. It's also factually incorrect.

Shimla's official elevation is around 2,202 m. Manali's average elevation is around 2,050 m. At town level, Shimla is actually slightly higher than Manali.

So no, the trip does not naturally climb from a lower Shimla to a higher Manali. If someone tells you to do Shimla first for acclimatisation reasons, they haven't checked the numbers.

The genuine reasons to do Shimla first are road distance, arrival-day fatigue and easing into hill driving. Not altitude.

Where Altitude Does Become Relevant

Altitude does matter, just not in the way those blogs claim.

Manali itself is not high. But it's the base for excursions that climb seriously.

Rohtang Pass sits at roughly 3,980 m and is 51 km from Manali. Solang Valley is 13 km from Manali. These day trips take you far above either town's elevation.

So the altitude conversation belongs to what you do around Manali, not to compare Shimla and Manali town levels. Keep those two things separate in your head.

What Is the Best Shimla-Manali Route From Delhi?

Food, Fuel, Parking And Network On The Route.jpg

Delhi to Shimla First

The practical flow runs from Delhi towards the Chandigarh and Kalka side, then climbs to Shimla.

After Shimla, you continue towards Manali through the Bilaspur, Mandi and Kullu side of Himachal.

The Shimla-Manali distance depends on which official source you trust. Himachal Tourism gives about 260 km while Shimla District Government gives about 280 km. Treat it as approximately 260 to 280 km.

Shimla District lists roughly 7 hours 15 minutes under normal conditions. But treat that as a full travel day. Traffic, tea stops and weather routinely add time in the hills, and you don't want to be racing daylight on unfamiliar roads.

Returning From Manali

Most travellers then descend through Kullu, Mandi and the Chandigarh corridor before returning to Delhi.

This is a full travel day too. Manali is roughly 530 to 550 km from Delhi according to differing Himachal Tourism figures. Don't plan any sightseeing on this day. It's a driving day, full stop.

Delhi to Manali First

The reverse is possible. You'd head to Manali first, then wind down to Shimla before returning to Delhi.

Pick this mainly when you specifically want the mountain portion to end in Shimla, so your final descent to Delhi feels shorter and calmer. For most Delhi travellers, though, Shimla first stays the default.

What Is the Best Route From Chandigarh?

Overnight Volvo from Delhi.jpg

Chandigarh to Shimla First

Use the verified 119 km and roughly 3.5 hours.

This is why Chandigarh starters have it easy. If your flight or train reaches Chandigarh around midday, you can still reach Shimla at a comfortable hour without turning day one into an endurance test.

You arrive with the evening still yours. That's a genuinely better start than any Manali-first plan from Chandigarh gives most people.

Chandigarh to Manali First

Chandigarh to Manali is about 300 km.

Highway improvements have made this route more practical than older travel guides suggest. Recent 2026 driving estimates commonly place the Chandigarh to Manali journey at around 6 to 7 hours in lighter traffic and closer to 8 to 9 hours during busier periods.

Do Manali first from Chandigarh when you can leave early and you have a reason to end in Shimla, like an early departure the next day.

What Changed on the Manali Highway in 2026?

Manali-Leh highway.jpg

The Kiratpur-Manali Corridor

The drive to Manali is not what it was a few years ago.

New tunnels and bypass sections have steadily removed several old bottlenecks on the way up. This is exactly why Manali-first is more realistic in 2026 than most older pages admit.

That said, don't assume every section is finished or traffic-proof. It isn't. But the trend is real.

The New Deod and Hanogi Tunnels

Two recent additions are worth knowing about.

The Deod tunnel is about 2.8 km long and the Hanogi tunnel about 650 metres. Both were opened to traffic on 11 September 2026 on the Pandoh Takoli section of NH 3.

Recent reports say the improved route can reduce the Mandi to Kullu journey to around one hour under normal traffic conditions. Initially, one tube of each twin tunnel was opened to traffic.

This matters for your planning because many older blogs still describe the Delhi or Chandigarh to Manali drive using pre-improvement times. If you're reading a 2022 travel post quoting scary Manali drive times, mentally knock some of that off.

Why You Still Need Extra Time

Better tunnels don't cancel bad days.

Peak-season traffic, monsoon disruption, landslides and winter slowdown near Manali all still happen. NHAI specifically flagged landslides, slope failures, debris and flooding as monsoon risks on Himachal's highway network in 2026.

So we never promise an exact arrival time in the mountains. Anyone who does is guessing.

Shimla First vs Manali First: Which Route Fits Your Trip?

HRTC Bus to Kaza in Winter 2026_ Timings, Shared Taxis & Backup Options.jpg

Families With Children

Do Shimla first in most cases. The shorter arrival day from Delhi or Chandigarh keeps kids from melting down before the trip even starts.

This is about cutting road fatigue, not about altitude. A shorter first drive means a happier first evening for everyone.

Travellers With Senior Citizens

Plan reasonable driving days with proper buffers built in.

A long, direct Manali transfer at the start can be genuinely tiring for older travellers. Breaking the journey and keeping arrival days short matters more than saving an hour on paper.

Couples and Honeymooners

Either order works fine here.

Don't fall for the idea that one route is more romantic. Choose based on your arrival and departure logistics. The views are stunning both ways, so let the flights decide.

Self-Drive Travellers

Confident hill drivers leaving Chandigarh early can be comfortable doing Manali first.

If this is your first time driving in the hills, don't plan around the fastest Google Maps timing. Those numbers assume conditions you won't always get. And never plan around speeding to make up time on mountain roads.

Bus Travellers

Both towns connect by road to Delhi and Chandigarh.

Treat the Shimla-Manali leg as a travel day. Don't book heavy sightseeing right after you step off a long bus ride. You'll want to rest, not rush to a viewpoint.

How Many Days Are Enough for Shimla and Manali?

Let me be honest about this.

A five-day trip is possible, but it's road-heavy. You'll spend a lot of it in transit and not enough of it actually enjoying the hills.

We usually recommend roughly six to eight days for a sensible first visit. A seven-day trip gives you one or two proper sightseeing days around each destination, plus the long transfer day in between.

This isn't a government rule. It's what we've learned from watching travellers try to do it in less and come back tired instead of relaxed. The road distances simply demand it.

Best 7-Day Shimla-Manali Route From Delhi

State Library The Ridge Shimla.jpg

Day 1 Delhi to Shimla

Cover the 370 km and roughly 8 hours to Shimla.

Keep the evening easy. Don't plan anything ambitious. Arrive, settle in, eat well, sleep. That's the whole job for day one.

Day 2 Shimla and Kufri

Take this day at a relaxed pace rather than chasing twenty attractions.

A slow morning walk on the Ridge, a trip up to Kufri, and a proper sit-down lunch beat a rushed checklist. You just drove a long way. Ease into the hills.

Day 3 Shimla to Manali

This is your big transfer, approximately 260 to 280 km.

Treat it as a full travel day. Start early, keep your stops planned, and don't expect to do sightseeing at the other end. Reaching Manali with daylight to spare is the win.

Day 4 Manali Local

Keep this a relaxed local day.

Old Manali, the Hadimba temple area, a walk along the Beas, and some good food. You've earned a slower day after that transfer.

Day 5 Solang Valley and Optional Sissu

Solang Valley is 13 km from Manali and makes an easy half-day.

Sissu is a possible add-on, but only when current road and weather conditions allow it. Don't lock it in blindly. If you're keen, look at our Sissu tour packages and we'll tell you if it's worth it on your dates.

Day 6 Manali Buffer or Adventure Day

Keep one flexible day. This is the smartest thing you can do in a mountain itinerary.

If the roads misbehaved earlier, this day absorbs the delay. If everything went smoothly, use it for something fun from our list of adventure activities in Manali. A buffer day is never wasted in the hills.

Day 7 Manali to Delhi

A full travel day back down.

Manali is roughly 530 to 550 km from Delhi according to differing Himachal Tourism figures. Start early and treat the whole day as driving. Don't book anything tight on the far end.

Best 7-Day Shimla-Manali Route From Chandigarh

What Can Couples Do in Shimla on a Honeymoon.jpg

Starting from Chandigarh cuts your plains-driving down a lot, which changes the whole feel of the trip.

For travellers arriving in Chandigarh later in the day, do Shimla first. That short 119 km hop means you're in the hills the same evening without a brutal drive.

Spend two nights around Shimla and Kufri, then take your transfer day to Manali, and give Manali three nights with a local day, a Solang day and a buffer day.

Now the reverse, for anyone who wants the final night closer to Chandigarh. Leave Chandigarh early and head straight to Manali first. Spend your Manali days up front, then transfer down to Shimla for your last nights.

On your final morning you're only about 119 km from Chandigarh, which is a gift if you've got an early flight or train.

Same towns, same days. The only real decision is where you want the long drive to sit.

Should You Add Rohtang Pass, Atal Tunnel or Sissu?

Manali To Jispa Via Atal Tunnel.jpg

Rohtang Pass is a sightseeing excursion, not part of the basic Delhi-Chandigarh-Shimla-Manali circuit. Treat it as an add-on from Manali, not a through-route.

Rohtang is 51 km from Manali and sits at roughly 3,980 m. Tourism vehicles going up need an official permit, so you can't just drive there on a whim.

Here's the current permit picture, and every bit of it can change, so confirm before you go. The official Rohtang permit portal currently lists a ₹500 tourism permit fee for cars and jeeps, along with a ₹50 congestion charge.

The daily tourism quota is currently 800 petrol vehicles and 400 diesel vehicles.

Permits can currently be applied for only for the next two days, and the vehicle must not be more than 10 years old.

That last point catches people out. If your rental or your own car is over 10 years old, you may not get a Rohtang permit at all. Check this before you count on the trip.

For a feel of what Rohtang is actually like in early season, read our guide to Rohtang Pass in May. If you'd rather skip Rohtang's permit hassle and crowds, Sissu is a calmer alternative, and our Sissu tour packages cover it.

Honestly, if permit stress isn't your thing, skip Rohtang and do Sissu or Solang instead. You still get snow and mountain views without the paperwork lottery.

Which Order Is Better in Summer, Monsoon and Winter?

Winter landscape of Manali with snow-covered roads and trees.jpg

Summer

Peak-season traffic can easily outweigh any theoretical driving time. The road might be "fast" on paper and slow in reality.

Plan early and build realistic buffers. Don't try to hit exact departure times you saw quoted online. Summer crowds don't care about your schedule.

Monsoon

Landslides, debris, slope failures and flooding can all affect Himachal roads in the rains.

We won't call either route guaranteed safe or guaranteed open during monsoon, because it isn't true. Check road advisories shortly before you leave, and keep an extra buffer day in hand. This is the season where your flexibility gets tested.

Winter

Snow can change local access around both Manali and Shimla.

We can't guarantee snowfall, and we can't guarantee Rohtang access in winter.

What we can say is this: when your final flight or train is fixed, finishing closer to Chandigarh can matter more than following the default Shimla-first order. In winter especially, don't gamble your departure on a snowbound road.

Common Shimla-Manali Route Mistakes

Shimla vs Manali for Honeymoon in 2026_ Which One Is Better for You.jpg

The most common mistake is treating Shimla to Manali as a short half-day journey. It's not. It's approximately 260 to 280 km of hill road and a full travel day. Plan for it properly.

Close behind is planning big sightseeing right after a major transfer. You arrive tired, and forcing a viewpoint visit that evening just sours the mood. Rest first, sightsee tomorrow.

Then there's relying on old Manali driving times that predate the recent highway improvements. Those 2026 tunnels changed things, so an outdated blog might scare you off a drive that's now much easier, or the reverse.

Another one we see constantly is the belief that Shimla is lower than Manali. It isn't. Shimla town is actually slightly higher, so don't build your plan around a false acclimatisation idea.

Booking a flight or train too close to the end of a mountain-road journey is a painful mistake. Roads run late. Give yourself a real cushion, especially if you're ending in Manali.

Finally, don't try to cram both towns into too few days. Five days is possible but road-heavy. Six to eight is where the trip actually breathes.

Final Verdict: Shimla First or Manali First?

For most first-time travellers from Delhi or Chandigarh, choose Shimla first and Manali second.

The reason is simple. Your first transfer is shorter, your arrival day is calmer, and the trip flows better from there. From Chandigarh especially, that easy 119 km start beats any Manali-first marathon.

But it's not a rule. If you can leave Chandigarh early and you've got an early flight or train after the trip, do Manali first and finish in Shimla. Ending only 119 km from Chandigarh on your departure day is worth more than sticking to the default.

In the end, road status and traffic matter more than any rigid itinerary. Build in a buffer day, check advisories before you leave, and don't chase exact timings you saw online.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I visit Shimla first or Manali first from Delhi?

Shimla first for most people. Delhi to Shimla is about 370 km and roughly 8 hours, which makes a calmer arrival day than pushing straight to Manali. Do Manali first only if you want to finish in Shimla for an easier last-day drive back to Delhi.

Should I visit Shimla first or Manali first from Chandigarh?

Shimla first, especially if you land in Chandigarh around midday. It's only 119 km and about 3.5 hours. Choose Manali first if you can leave early and want to end in Shimla before an early flight or train.

How many days are enough for Shimla and Manali?

We recommend roughly six to eight days for a first trip. A seven-day plan gives you one or two sightseeing days around each town plus the long transfer day in between.

Can I cover Shimla and Manali in five days?

Yes, but it's road-heavy. You'll spend a lot of the trip driving and less of it enjoying the hills. Six days or more feels far more relaxed.

What is the distance between Shimla and Manali?

Official sources differ. Himachal Tourism gives about 260 km and Shimla District Government gives about 280 km, so plan for approximately 260 to 280 km.

Can I drive from Shimla to Manali in one day?

Yes, and most people do. Shimla District lists about 7 hours 15 minutes in normal conditions, but treat it as a full travel day because traffic and weather add time.

Is Manali-first faster after the new 2026 tunnels?

The Manali approach has improved with the Deod and Hanogi tunnels, which opened to traffic in September 2026. This makes Manali first more practical than older travel guides suggest, although peak traffic, road conditions and weather can still affect journey times.

Which order is better for families with children?

Shimla first in most cases. The shorter arrival day from Delhi or Chandigarh keeps kids fresher and reduces road fatigue before the trip really begins.

Which order is better for senior citizens?

Shimla first usually, with reasonable driving days and buffers built in. A long, direct Manali transfer at the start can be tiring, so keep arrival days short.

Which order is better during the monsoon?

Neither order is guaranteed safe in monsoon, since landslides and flooding can affect both routes. Check road advisories just before departure and keep a buffer day regardless of which order you pick.

Should I finish in Shimla if my flight is from Chandigarh?

It can help. Ending in Shimla leaves you only about 119 km from Chandigarh on your final morning, instead of the longer 300 km Manali transfer. That's useful when your flight or train is early.

Do I need a permit for Rohtang Pass?

Yes. Tourism vehicles need an official permit, currently listed at ₹500 plus a ₹50 congestion charge. Daily vehicle quotas apply, and eligible vehicles must not be more than 10 years old. Check the latest official rules before travelling, as permit conditions can change.
