Sethan

Sethan is roughly 12 to 15 km from Manali, sitting at about 2,700 metres. You reach it by climbing up from the Prini side into the Hamta Valley. 

That short climb is the whole character of the place, trees on both sides, narrow village lanes, and a hush you only get away from the main tourist rush.

Sissu 

Sissu is around 38 to 40 km from Manali at about 3,100 metres. You get there by heading north past the Solang and Dhundi side, crossing the Atal Tunnel, and coming out into Lahaul. That crossing is dramatic. 

You go in on the Manali side and come out into a completely different, open, treeless world.

So Sethan is the intimate snow village experience, with forest and igloos when there is enough snow. Sissu is the big landscape experience, with an open snowy valley floor and a winter waterfall.

Which Has More Reliable Snow: Sethan or Sissu?

Fresh snowfall and snow already on the ground are different

This is the confusion that ruins more winter trips than bad roads. Watching snow fall while you stand in it needs an active weather system passing through that day. Neither Sethan nor Sissu can guarantee that on the date you booked.

But you can still have a brilliant day. During a clear, sunny spell you can walk into deep settled snow that fell days earlier. In our experience most travellers are actually happier with settled snow and blue skies than with a grey day of light flurries.

Sethan vs Sissu in December

Sethan can get December snow, but the amount swings a lot from year to year. Having a little snow on the ground and having enough for an igloo village to run are two very different thresholds.

Sissu is higher, and December marks the start of the main winter snow period. Even so, exact snow depth is never guaranteed on any given day.

Sethan vs Sissu in January and February

Both places can hold serious settled snow in deep winter. This is the strongest window for reliable Sethan snow and Sissu snow on the ground.

Now the part you must read before booking February. In 2026, tourism activities in Sissu were reported as suspended for a period linked to traditional winter religious observances. 

The Tribune reported this as January 20 to February 28, 2026. A separate report said restrictions began earlier in some parts of the Koksar and Sissu belt, so the exact start date may vary by local area and notice.

Because these dates conflict, treat the exact start date as unconfirmed and check the current district or local notice before you plan a February Sissu trip.

The point is simple. Do not assume Sissu is open in February just because the snow looks perfect. The snow being great and the village being open to tourists are two separate questions that year.

Sethan vs Sissu in March

Sissu's roughly 3,100 metre altitude helps settled snow linger later into the season. Sethan can also keep its winter snow into March depending on how much fell that year.

Which Is Easier to Reach from Manali in Winter?

Manali to Sethan

Sethan is about 12 to 15 km away and takes roughly 40 to 60 minutes in good conditions. The road climbs from the Prini side toward the Hamta Valley.

That climb is the catch. Packed snow or ice on the final stretch can slow you down badly. We will not tell you a 4x4 is mandatory every single day, because it is not. 

But after heavy snowfall a suitable vehicle, tyre chains, or a proper 4x4 with an experienced local driver may become necessary depending on the day's conditions.

Manali to Sissu

Sissu is about 38 to 40 km and takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours in normal road and traffic conditions. The route runs from Manali, past the Solang or Dhundi side, through the Atal Tunnel, and on to Sissu.

The Atal Tunnel is 9.02 km long and skips the seasonal Rohtang Pass route entirely. That sounds like it makes winter easy. It does not always. Winter traffic, active snow clearance, and police checks can stretch that 1.5 hour drive into something much longer.

What Permits or Registrations Do You Need in 2026?

Let us clear up the paperwork, because this is where people get confused and lose time at the checkpoint.

Start with the Sethan and Hamta side. The official District Administration Kullu Hamta Pass system lists a congestion charge of ₹100 for two wheelers and ₹200 for cars and jeeps. It shows daily quotas of 100 two wheelers and 400 cars or jeeps. 

A printed permission is compulsory, so do not rely on a screen on your phone. You need valid ID, PUC, and vehicle details, and the portal states the vehicle should not be more than 10 years old.

Read this as a Hamta road vehicle permission, not a personal Sethan entry ticket. It is about your vehicle using that road, not about you walking into the village.

Now Sissu. The official e-Aagman portal states that vehicles entering Lahaul and Spiti need an e-pass. It lists an e-permit for the Koksar Chandratal circuit and an e-ticket per vehicle for other destinations.

Here is the honest muddle

Many travel guides online say Sissu itself needs no permit, while the official e-Aagman system lists vehicle registration requirements for entering Lahaul. So use this principle instead of a flat yes or no. 

The Atal Tunnel trip is not the same as an old Rohtang sightseeing permit, but you should check the current e-Aagman vehicle registration requirement before entering Lahaul. Do not assume Sissu needs nothing.

Which Road Is Better After Fresh Snowfall?

Neither road is universally safer, and anyone who tells you otherwise has not driven both in a bad week.

Sethan's Hamta road is much shorter, but it has that steep local climb. Fresh snow, packed snow, and ice can make suitable tyres, chains, an experienced driver, or a 4x4 necessary.

Sissu uses the major Atal Tunnel corridor, which sounds bulletproof. But an all season tunnel does not mean unrestricted tourist access on every winter day. 

Here is the proof. On March 15 and 16, 2026, more than 1,000 vehicles were reported stranded near the Atal Tunnel after snowfall, and authorities temporarily stopped vehicles from going beyond Solang Nallah. 

Earlier, on January 23, 2026, heavy snowfall was reported to have closed the Manali to Atal Tunnel road.

What we tell our travellers is blunt. Check road conditions on the morning of the trip. An update from the previous evening means nothing once snow falls overnight.

What Is the Actual Snow Experience Like at Sethan?

Sethan feels like a real village that happens to be buried in snow, not a tourist stall zone. You get the forest around you, quiet lanes, and that still winter air where you can actually hear the snow crunch underfoot.

When there is enough snow, this is where the seasonal igloo village appears, along with snow walks and skiing or snowboarding where local operators are running them. The catch is right there in that sentence. 

Igloos and activities depend on enough snow and on operators being set up. Do not travel expecting them to be running every single day, because some years the snow simply does not arrive in time.

What Is the Actual Snow Experience Like at Sissu?

Sissu is the opposite feeling. You emerge from the tunnel into open Lahaul at around 3,100 metres, and suddenly the mountains pull back and the sky opens up.

The draw here is the wide snow covered valley floor and the Sissu waterfall, which can freeze partly in deep winter. Standing in that open white bowl is a very different experience from Sethan's forested lanes.

And honestly, the drive is half the point. Going through the tunnel and coming out into that changed landscape is part of the day, not just the way to reach it. 

One insider note, stopping and photography inside the Atal Tunnel are prohibited, so treat it purely as a passage and save your photos for the permitted spots outside.

Which Is Better for Families, Couples and Photographers?

Families with children

This is a trade off, not a clear winner. Sethan means less driving, which helps with kids, but its final road is steep and can be icy. Sissu means a longer journey but gives you broad open areas to spread out when the route and tourism access are open. 

The safest family choice is always whichever destination officials and experienced local drivers say is actually reachable that morning.

Couples

Sethan suits couples who want a village atmosphere, forest, quiet, and the chance of an igloo experience. Sissu suits couples who want dramatic open scenery and a proper little road trip into Lahaul.

Sethan gives you snow covered trees, houses, lanes, and human scale, the cosy winter frames. Sissu gives you a wide mountain scale, the Lahaul landscape, and the winter waterfall, the epic frames. Different portfolios, both worth it.

Choose on official access and road grip first, then on the kind of experience you want. Get that order wrong and you can end up stuck or turned back.

How Should You Plan a Sethan Snow Day Trip from Manali?

Start by checking the Hamta vehicle permission and the live road status. Do both before you even book a cab.

We will not hand you a rigid hour by hour plan, because ice makes a mockery of schedules. 

Start with enough daylight in hand, spend time in the village and the nearby snow, add one seasonal activity if it is genuinely running, and begin your return while there is still daylight, since icy roads are far worse in the dark.

Use 40 to 60 minutes as your drive estimate only for normal good conditions, and pad it generously if snow has fallen.

How Should You Plan a Sissu Snow Day Trip from Manali?

Confirm three things before you leave, that the Atal Tunnel is open, that Sissu tourism access is on that day, and what the current e-Aagman requirement is.

Never force a route after police, BRO, or the local administration has restricted it. That stranded 1,000 vehicle jam near the Atal Tunnel in March 2026 is exactly what happens when people push a closed road.

If the high road is shut, Solang Valley or a lower Manali sightseeing day is your practical fallback. You still get snow play in a good year without the risk.

What Should You Carry for Either Snow Day Trip?

Pack for cold and wet, not for photos. You want thermal layers, a warm insulated layer, waterproof outerwear, and waterproof footwear with real grip, because plain sneakers on packed snow are how people fall.
