Manali to Solang Valley by Bus

Solang Nullah is 13 km from Manali according to Himachal Tourism. Close enough that it feels like a quick trip, far enough that you do not want to walk it.

How Can You Reach Sissu and Atal Tunnel Without a Private Taxi?

Sissu sits about 38 to 40 km from Manali, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours away in normal conditions, though traffic and weather can stretch that.

The route in plain order goes like this. You leave Manali, head past the Solang side, pass through the Atal Tunnel, come out on the Lahaul side, and reach Sissu.

For buses, use the HRTC services heading toward Keylong or Kaza when their schedule lines up with your plan. They pass Sissu, so you get off there.

Shared taxis are your backup and middle-ground option when the bus timing does not work.

Can You Visit Rohtang Pass by Bus in 2026?

Rohtang Pass is 51 km from Manali according to Himachal Tourism.

Good news for 2026. HRTC resumed an electric tourist bus service toward Rohtang on May 23, 2026, with an initial reported fare of ₹500 per passenger. 

By June 5, 2026, HRTC had expanded the tourist circuit to cover about 10 attractions, including Rohtang and the Atal Tunnel and Lahaul side, at ₹700 per passenger.

Because this is a seasonal tourist service, check the current HRTC route, departure time, operating days and fare for your exact travel date before planning around it. 

The ₹700 fare was reported for the expanded 2026 tourist circuit, but seasonal services can change with demand and road conditions.

Now the permit part, which confuses everyone. The Rohtang tourism permit is a vehicle-level rule, not a per-person ticket. The tourism vehicle permit fee is ₹500 per vehicle. 

The daily quota is 800 petrol vehicles and 400 diesel vehicles. The congestion charge is ₹50 for cars, jeeps and MUVs and ₹100 for buses and HMVs.

So here is the important bit. If you travel on a public bus, you do not personally buy a ₹500 vehicle permit. That is the operator's responsibility, not yours. Do not let anyone convince you otherwise. The official permit portal is rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in.

Which Parts of Manali Are Better Explored on Foot?

Mall Road, Old Manali and the central neighbourhoods reward walking. This is where you actually save money, because every short ride you skip is cash back in your pocket.

The area around Mall Road, the market lanes and the cafes of Old Manali connect well enough that your feet do most of the work. You also stumble onto small shops and food spots you would blow past in a car.

Be honest with yourself about the terrain, though. Manali is hilly. If you are carrying suitcases, travelling with elderly family or small kids, or dealing with any mobility limits, a short local vehicle ride makes sense even when two places look close on the map.
