Himachal or Kashmir in Winter 2026-27: Snow, Travel Time, Comfort and Budget

Choosing between Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir for a winter trip in 2026 to 2027 depends on the kind of snow experience, travel comfort and budget you prefer.
Both destinations offer beautiful mountain landscapes and opportunities to enjoy snowfall, but differences in travel time, accessibility, winter activities and accommodation costs can influence which destination suits your holiday plans.
This guide by Travel Coffee compares Himachal and Kashmir in winter, including snowfall possibilities, popular destinations, travel distances, estimated trip costs and important weather and road considerations.
It will help you understand the differences between these two winter destinations and choose a suitable trip based on your available days, budget, comfort preferences and snow expectations.
Quick Answer
If you are choosing Himachal or Kashmir in winter mainly for snow, Kashmir, and Gulmarg in particular, gives you the stronger chance of a proper snow holiday.
If you start from Delhi or Chandigarh and want a flexible road trip, Shimla and Manali are easier to reach and easier to adjust.
A short flight to Srinagar still leaves you with onward driving, and snow can disrupt flights and roads in both regions.
Your starting city, your winter month, how much cold you can handle and your full trip cost should decide the answer. Nobody can promise snow on fixed dates.
Himachal or Kashmir in Winter: Which Is Better for You?

We plan winter trips to both regions from our office in Shimla. We ask every traveller about four things before we suggest a destination.
The first is snow likelihood at the exact place you stay or visit. The second is your real journey time from door to hotel.
The third is winter comfort: heating, hot water, cold hours outdoors and hotel access after snowfall. The fourth is the full trip cost, not the headline package price.
What Most Tourists Get Wrong
Most people compare a whole state with a single resort. Himachal is a full state. Gulmarg is one snow resort inside Kashmir.
Srinagar and Gulmarg also feel very different in winter. Srinagar is the city base. Gulmarg sits higher and much colder.
The same split exists in Himachal. Manali town and Solang Valley are not the same place, and snow at Solang does not mean snow outside your Manali hotel.
The second big mistake is comparing a package that starts in Delhi with one that starts in Srinagar. The Delhi package already covers your travel. The Srinagar one does not.
That single difference can make Kashmir look cheaper or Himachal look cheaper when neither is true. We explain how to compare quotes properly later in this guide.
If Kashmir already sits at the top of your list, browse our Kashmir winter tour packages to see how we structure Srinagar and Gulmarg stays.
Where Are You More Likely to See Snow, Himachal or Kashmir?

Gulmarg vs Manali Town
Gulmarg wins on cold. India Meteorological Department climate normals for 1991 to 2020 put Gulmarg's January average at a minimum of minus 7.7°C and a maximum of 0.7°C.
Daytime temperatures that hover around freezing help snow stay on the ground. That cold explains why Gulmarg works so well for a snow-focused trip.
Please read these as long-term averages. They do not forecast any particular day in January 2027.
Manali town works differently. You may wake up to snow there on some winter mornings, but no honest planner can promise snow at your Manali hotel on a given date.
For comparison, Srinagar's January average runs from minus 1.9°C to 7.1°C. So even inside Kashmir, the city and the resort give you very different snow odds.
Solang Valley, Kufri and Other Himachal Snow Areas
Most Manali snow plans actually happen at Solang Valley, which Himachal Tourism places 13 km from Manali.
From Shimla, travellers usually look at Kufri as a snow excursion. Narkanda is another option further along, again subject to weather and safe road access.
Here is the key point. Driving to a nearby snow spot for a few hours feels very different from staying inside a snowy town for three nights.
If you want snow outside your window, Gulmarg suits you better. If you are happy with a day of snow play and a warmer town base, Himachal works well.
Snowfall vs Snow Already on the Ground
Watching fresh snow fall and playing in snow that is already lying on the ground are two separate experiences.
You can get one without the other. A dry, sunny week can follow a heavy spell, leaving plenty of snow to play in but no falling flakes.
Photos and reels from last winter tell you nothing about your booked dates. Snow varies a lot from year to year.
What we tell our travellers: check the forecast and recent local access reports a few days before you leave, then again on the morning you travel.
Is December, January or February Better for Snow?

December: Winter Atmosphere Without a Snow Guarantee
December brings holiday energy, Christmas lights and New Year plans. It does not bring a snow guarantee for 25 December or 31 December.
Gulmarg's December average still runs cold, with a minimum of minus 4.8°C and a maximum of 4.6°C. That does not tell you when the first snowfall arrives.
Holiday weeks also pull big crowds into Shimla, Manali and Srinagar. Book hotels and transport early if you must travel during Christmas and New Year week.
January: Colder Weather and Possible Road Disruptions
January runs coldest at the stations we track. Gulmarg averages minus 7.7°C to 0.7°C, while Shimla averages 3.0°C to 11.4°C.
These numbers come from two separate weather stations. They do not describe every hill town in either region.
Here is the honest negative: The same snow that makes January exciting also blocks roads and ground flights. Plan for both together.
On 27 January 2026, snowfall cancelled flights at Srinagar airport and shut the Jammu to Srinagar national highway. That was one dated event, not a forecast, but it shows why buffer days matter.
February: An Alternative for Snow-Focused Holidays
Gulmarg's February average sits at minus 6.4°C to 1.8°C, still very cold. Shimla's February average runs from 4.2°C to 12.9°C.
If your dates are flexible and snow is your main goal, February deserves a serious look for Gulmarg.
We cannot promise lower prices, deeper snow or emptier slopes on every February date. Weather and demand change each year.
How Much Time Does It Take to Reach Himachal or Kashmir?

Delhi and Chandigarh to Manali or Shimla
Himachal Tourism's Manali page gives Delhi to Manali as about 530 to 550 km, depending on the route you count.
From Chandigarh, Manali sits about 300 km away, which makes Himachal very convenient for travellers from Punjab and Haryana.
Our Delhi to Manali overnight Volvo itinerary estimates about 12 to 14 hours on the road. Traffic and winter road conditions can stretch that.
Shimla gives you more ways in. You can drive, take a bus or use the train connection via Kalka. Check the current timetables before you book.
Delhi to Srinagar and Then Gulmarg
Air India Express describes non-stop Delhi to Srinagar flights as taking about 1 hour 25 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes, depending on the service.
That covers only the flight. Add time to reach the Delhi airport, check in, wait for bags and arrange your transfer in Srinagar.
Gulmarg sits about 55 to 60 km from Srinagar, according to government tourism information.
Winter driving time on that road depends on fresh snow, road clearing and traffic, so leave room in your day plan.
Can You Reach Kashmir by Train in 2026-27?
Yes, partly. The Ministry of Railways confirmed that direct Jammu Tawi to Srinagar Vande Bharat trains started regular operation on 2 May 2026.
The route covers about 266 km, and one scheduled service in the original timetable takes 4 hours 50 minutes.
In that original timetable, trains 26401 and 26402 ran every day except Tuesday, and 26403 and 26404 ran every day except Wednesday.
This is not a direct Delhi to Srinagar train. You arrange the Delhi to Jammu leg separately, then board in Jammu.
Train timings, operating days and service availability between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar may change during winter due to weather conditions, operational requirements and railway schedule revisions.
Before booking, check the latest timetable, running status and seat availability on the official IRCTC website or through Indian Railways' enquiry services for your travel dates.
Which Winter Destinations Should You Actually Visit?

Himachal: Shimla, Kufri, Manali and Solang
Shimla works as a comfortable base. You get the town walks, the colonial streets and an easy excursion to Kufri.
For a warm stop after a cold day, grab a cup of chai at the tea stalls near The Ridge in Shimla and watch the evening crowd.
Compare options on our Shimla tour packages page if you want a short, low-stress winter break.
Manali gives you cafés, the old town lanes and local temples, plus the chance of snow activities at Solang when conditions allow.
Our Manali holiday packages keep Solang flexible, because weather decides how far vehicles can go.
Sissu on the Lahaul side can make a lovely extra day, but only when roads and local restrictions allow it. Look at our Sissu and Lahaul trips and treat Sissu as a bonus, not a promise.
Kashmir: Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam
Srinagar acts as your city base, with Dal Lake, gardens and old city markets.
Gulmarg is the strongest snow-activity destination in this whole comparison. If your trip revolves around snow, Gulmarg should anchor your plan.
Pahalgam can add a scenic extension, but several sightseeing points around it may stay closed. We cover the current status in the closures section below.
Do not assume Sonamarg or remote snow points will work in deep winter. Check access before you add them.
Should You Add Winter Spiti, Rohtang or Sonamarg?
Winter Spiti needs a very different level of planning and cold tolerance from a Shimla or Manali holiday. Please do not judge all of Himachal by a winter Spiti trip.
Skip Rohtang Pass in your December or January plan. Himachal Tourism says heavy snow normally closes around late November, with reopening around May. Any agent selling Rohtang in midwinter is selling something that will not happen.
Sonamarg needs a fresh road access check before you include it in a Kashmir winter itinerary.
Which Is More Comfortable for Families, Couples and Senior Travellers?

Hotel Heating, Hot Water and Night-Time Cold
Heating decides how much you enjoy a winter trip. Ask every hotel four questions before you pay.
Does the room come with a heater? Does it run through the night? Does the hotel charge extra for it? Can vehicles reach the hotel after fresh snowfall?
Both of our published sample packages list heating as chargeable, so budget for it rather than assuming it comes free.
Ask about hot water timings too. Some hill hotels supply hot water only at fixed hours.
A warm base hotel feels very different from spending a full day outside in deep snow. Gulmarg asks your body for more cold hours than a Shimla town break.
Children and Senior Citizens
A Shimla or Manali town base lets families step out for a few snow hours, then return to a warmer room.
A dedicated stay in Gulmarg means colder evenings, more walking on slippery ground and less room to escape the cold.
Think about long road transfers, icy paths, hotel access and how easily you can cut a snow excursion short if someone feels unwell.
We cannot declare any destination safe for every traveller. If anyone in your group has a health condition, speak to their doctor before you book a high, cold stay.
Honeymoons and Relaxed Holidays
Couples often love Kashmir in winter for the snowy surroundings, cosy hotels and the classic houseboat stay in Srinagar.
Book a winter houseboat only after the owner confirms the heating and comfort arrangements. A cold houseboat night ruins the romance fast.
Himachal suits couples who prefer cafés, slow walks and flexible sightseeing in Manali or Shimla. Both work. Your idea of a good holiday decides.
What Does a Himachal vs Kashmir Winter Trip Really Cost?

Compare the Same Number of Hotel Nights
Here is our best money-saving tip: compare quotes on equal terms before you choose a destination.
Take two adults sharing a room. Ask both quotes for the same number of actual hotel nights, a similar hotel standard, comparable meals and the same starting city.
Watch the night count. A package labelled "4 nights" may include overnight bus journeys rather than four nights in a hotel bed.
Once you line up the numbers this way, the real cost difference often looks very different from the headline prices.
What Do Travel Coffee's Published Packages Show?
Our Delhi to Manali winter getaway currently shows ₹10,999 per person with a 5D/4N label. The final price may vary depending on your travel dates, departure availability, seasonal demand and package inclusions. Confirm the latest fare with Travel Coffee before booking.
It starts and ends in Delhi. You get two hotel nights in Manali plus two overnight Volvo journeys.
The package includes the round-trip Volvo, the listed local sightseeing, and breakfast and dinner on hotel nights.
Our Kashmir Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam package currently shows ₹12,500 per person, also labelled 5D/4N.
Prices may change depending on your travel dates, hotel category, room sharing arrangements and seasonal demand. Request an updated quotation from Travel Coffee to confirm the final package cost and inclusions.
It starts in Srinagar and gives you four hotel nights: three in Srinagar and one in Pahalgam. It covers the listed meals and itinerary transport, but not your travel to Srinagar.
Please read this clearly. ₹10,999 and ₹12,500 are not like-for-like total trip costs. The starting points differ and the hotel night counts differ.
We took these figures from our website listings during October 2026. They do not represent Christmas, New Year or January 2027 prices, and they may change.
One more honest note. The Kashmir package itinerary mentions Chandanwari, which an official Anantnag notice listed as closed in July 2026. Confirm its current status with us before you count on it.
The Expenses Most Comparisons Forget
Kashmir quotes usually leave out your airfare to Srinagar. Add it before you compare anything.
Then add extra road transfers, any special winter vehicle arrangements and local sightseeing transport outside the itinerary.
Budget separately for room heaters, snow boots or snow clothing, ski activities, Gondola tickets, extra meals and a possible extra hotel night if weather blocks your return.
The Manali package excludes optional activities, chargeable room heating and extra accommodation after weather delays.
The Kashmir package excludes travel to Srinagar, Gondola tickets, certain local union transport, optional snow activities and chargeable heaters.
Which Roads, Permits and Attractions Can Be Closed in Winter 2026-27?
Rohtang Pass and Atal Tunnel
Rohtang Pass sits 51 km from Manali. Heavy snow normally shuts it from around late November until around May.
Rohtang tourist vehicle permits matter only when the pass actually opens. A permit cannot take you over a closed winter pass.
The Atal Tunnel makes the Lahaul side far easier to reach, but it does not guarantee winter access. On 17 March 2026, heavy snowfall suspended traffic near the tunnel, and authorities evacuated about 1,600 vehicles.
Snowfall also disrupted traffic through the Atal Tunnel during January 2026, highlighting how quickly winter road conditions can change.
Even when the tunnel is operational, access to Sissu may be restricted due to heavy snow, icy roads or avalanche risks. Check the latest traffic advisories from local authorities before including Sissu in your winter itinerary.
Sissu and Local Community Restrictions
In 2026, the Sissu panchayat suspended tourism activities from 20 January to 28 February.
Do not assume the same restriction will repeat in 2027. Tourism restrictions in Sissu for winter 2027 will depend on decisions made by the local panchayat and district administration.
Travellers planning a visit between January and February should check official announcements closer to their departure dates and keep alternative sightseeing options available in case seasonal restrictions are introduced.
If the community restricts tourism during its winter period, respect it. Local cultural decisions come before any itinerary.
Gulmarg Gondola and Pahalgam Closures
Here is an insider timing tip many guides miss. The Jammu & Kashmir Cable Car Corporation schedules preventive maintenance closures for the Gulmarg Gondola on the second and fourth Monday of each month.
Keep your Gulmarg day off those Mondays. That one check can save your whole snow day.
You can book Gondola tickets online up to 120 days in advance under the official booking policy. Weather can still stop operations on the day.
Scam warning: book Gondola tickets only through the official eticket website. Different commercial sites quote different Phase 1 and Phase 2 prices right now, so do not trust a fee a tout or third-party site gives you. Check the live price at the official checkout.
Around Pahalgam, Anantnag district's notice dated 7 July 2026 listed Baisaran, Chandanwari, Tulian Lake, Daksum, Sinthan Top and Margan Top among closed tourist locations.
That is a dated status, not a permanent ban. Nobody has announced a reopening date, so check the current position before you plan a visit.
What Winter Activities Can You Enjoy in Each Destination?

Kashmir Snow Experiences
Gulmarg gives you snow play, beginner skiing, the Gondola and long hours in a proper snow resort when the weather cooperates.
Higher Gondola access can stop because of weather or maintenance. Treat it as a hope, not a fixed itinerary item.
Ski lessons and equipment rental charges in Gulmarg vary depending on the instructor, lesson duration, equipment type and season.
Before booking, compare prices from authorised local providers and confirm whether the quoted amount includes skis, boots, safety equipment and instructor fees. Rates and availability may change during peak winter periods.
Himachal Snow Experiences
Solang Valley offers winter snow activities when conditions and operators allow. Read our guide to adventure activities in Manali to see which ones suit which season.
Please do not expect paragliding, rafting or a Rohtang drive in midwinter. Those belong to other seasons.
If the snow road closes, Manali and Shimla still give you a good day. Walk Old Manali, visit local temples, or explore Shimla's town and Kufri when the road permits.
How Many Days Are Enough for a Himachal or Kashmir Winter Trip?

These are suggested structures, not confirmed schedules. Weather and roads will shape the final plan.
Four-Day Shimla and Kufri Idea
Spend day one reaching Shimla and settling into a heated hotel.
Use day two for Shimla town sightseeing and an evening walk around the Mall.
Keep day three for an optional Kufri excursion if the weather and road allow it. If not, use the day for a slower town plan.
Use day four to travel home without rushing. We do not promise snow on any of these days.
Five-Day Manali and Solang Idea
First, check whether your "five days" includes two overnight bus journeys. If it does, you get fewer actual days in Manali.
A five-day plan with full days on the ground could look like this. Day one covers arrival and Manali town. Day two goes to Solang Valley for snow, if conditions allow.
Day three can include Sissu only if the tunnel, roads and local restrictions permit. Day four covers Old Manali and cafés, and day five covers your return.
If a snow road closes, swap in the town activities. Do not push vehicles onto roads that local authorities have closed.
Five-Day Srinagar and Gulmarg Idea
Spend your first two days in Srinagar to settle into the cold and see the city.
Give Gulmarg either a full day trip or, better for snow lovers, an overnight stay. Avoid the Gondola maintenance Mondays.
Add Pahalgam only if your dates and road conditions make it practical. Do not build the trip around Baisaran or Chandanwari.
Keep the last day free as a buffer before your flight or train.
How Do You Prepare for Winter Travel Delays and Extreme Cold?
Weather and Transport Contingencies
The 2026 season showed what snow can do. On 27 January, snow cancelled Srinagar flights and shut the Jammu to Srinagar highway. In March, snow halted Atal Tunnel traffic.
Neither event predicts 2027. Both show why a buffer day turns a disaster into an inconvenience.
What we tell our travellers: never book a non-refundable onward flight or train for the same day you leave the mountains in January.
Clothing, Hotels and Booking Conditions
Pack thermal layers, a warm jacket, waterproof shoes with good grip, gloves and extra socks. Wet snow soaks through ordinary sneakers within minutes.
Keep a spare pair of gloves in your bag. Wet gloves turn a fun snow hour into a miserable one.
Before you pay, confirm heating, hot water, snow transport arrangements and the cancellation policy in writing.
Read what your travel insurance actually covers. We cannot promise road reopening times or rescue arrangements, and you should not believe anyone who does.
Who Should Finally Choose Himachal and Who Should Choose Kashmir?
So, Himachal or Kashmir in winter? Here is our honest verdict.
Choose Himachal if you start from Delhi or Chandigarh, want flexible road access and want tight control over your travel costs.
Choose Gulmarg if snow and skiing are your main reasons for travelling, and you are ready for real cold and possible delays.
Families and older travellers should put heated rooms, realistic travel days and easy-to-shorten snow outings first. That often favours a town base.
Couples can enjoy either. Kashmir gives you snowy scenery and houseboats. Himachal gives you cafés and flexibility.
Pick based on your actual dates, starting city and comfort needs, not a dramatic snow photo from someone else's trip.
Both destinations offer different winter experiences, so the right choice depends on what matters most to you. If you're leaning towards Himachal, browse our Himachal Tour Packages for itinerary ideas, or WhatsApp us to discuss which destination might suit your plans better.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Himachal or Kashmir better for snowfall in December?
Gulmarg runs colder, so its snow odds are stronger. Neither region can promise snowfall on specific December dates.
Which is snowier in January, Gulmarg or Manali?
Gulmarg is far colder, averaging minus 7.7°C to 0.7°C in January. Manali town snow varies, so most Manali snow plans focus on Solang.
Will there be snow in Shimla during Christmas 2026?
Nobody can predict that today. Check the forecast a few days before Christmas and keep Kufri as a flexible excursion.
Which destination is cheaper for a five-day winter holiday?
It depends on your starting city, hotel nights and airfare. Compare quotes with the same hotel nights, hotel category and departure point.
Is Delhi to Manali quicker than flying to Srinagar and driving to Gulmarg?
The flight takes about 1 hour 25 to 1 hour 40 minutes, but airport time and the drive add more. The Delhi to Manali Volvo takes about 12 to 14 hours.
Can I travel from Jammu to Srinagar by train in winter 2026–27?
Yes, Jammu Tawi to Srinagar Vande Bharat trains run since 2 May 2026. Check winter timetables for your dates and book Delhi to Jammu separately.
Is Kashmir or Himachal better for families with children?
A Shimla or Manali town base gives families more warmth and flexibility. Gulmarg suits families comfortable with long cold hours outdoors.
Which destination is more comfortable for senior citizens?
A heated town hotel with short snow outings usually feels easier. Consult a doctor before any cold, high-altitude stay.
Is Rohtang Pass open in December or January?
No. Heavy snow normally closes Rohtang from around late November until around May.
Is the Atal Tunnel to Sissu always open in winter?
No. Snow suspended tunnel traffic in March 2026, and Sissu had a local tourism restriction from 20 January to 28 February 2026.
How much does the Gulmarg Gondola cost, and can snowfall close it?
Current price reports conflict, so check the official checkout for your date. Weather and second and fourth Monday maintenance can close it.
What should I do if winter weather cancels my flight or blocks a road?
Stay put in a safe, heated hotel and follow official updates. Keep a buffer day and flexible bookings so one delay does not wreck the trip.
