If you have a flight into Bhuntar Airport and you are trying to figure out how to reach Manali, here is the short version.
The airport sits about 50 km from Manali, a taxi takes around 1.5 to 2 hours in normal traffic, and the road runs along the Beas River for most of the way.
We run trips on this exact route every season. This guide by Travel Coffee covers the real fares, the bus situation, the drive itself, and what to do when a flight gets cancelled and your plan falls apart.
The Bhuntar Airport to Manali distance is roughly 50 km. A private taxi normally takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
Indicative private-taxi quotes for 2026 broadly range from ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 for commonly used cars. The final price depends on the vehicle, the season, your luggage and where your hotel is.
A bus is cheaper. But it is not a smooth terminal-to-hotel service. You will likely reach the Bhuntar highway or bus-stop area, board a Manali-bound bus, and then arrange a short local transfer to your hotel once you reach Manali.
If you would rather have the pickup, hotel and route handled for you, our Manali tour packages

The official name is Kullu-Manali Airport. It sits at Bhuntar in Kullu district, not inside Manali itself.
This confuses a lot of first-timers. People call it Bhuntar Airport, Kullu Airport and Manali Airport, but it is all the same place.
The IATA airport code is KUU. The aerodrome code is VIBR.
By road, it is the nearest practical airport to Manali. Nothing else comes close in terms of drive time when the flights are actually running.

The approximate road distance is 50 km.
The exact number shifts depending on your final property. A central Manali hotel, Old Manali, Vashisht, Prini, a place on Naggar Road, or a hotel towards Solang will each need a slightly different final drive.
Share your hotel's map pin with the driver, not just the property name. Half the hotels in Manali have similar names, and a wrong turn on these narrow roads costs you 20 minutes easily.

Use 1.5 to 2 hours as the normal taxi driving estimate.
But that is just wheels-turning time. Your real airport-to-hotel plan has to include baggage collection, walking out, finding your driver, traffic near towns, and the final approach to your hotel.
What most tourists get wrong is treating the 2-hour figure as the whole journey. It is not. Add buffer for the bits that happen before and after the actual drive.
Summer weekends, long weekends, Christmas, New Year and fresh-snow days all create congestion. The pinch points are usually near Kullu, Patlikuhal and the approach into Manali.
We will not promise you a maximum travel time here. On a bad holiday weekend, that clean 2-hour drive can stretch well past it, and anyone who gives you a fixed number is guessing.
In monsoon, rain can bring debris, landslides or temporary traffic holds. In winter, snow and black ice slow everything down and sometimes trigger restrictions.
One thing worth knowing honestly. An extreme January 2026 event reportedly turned a 15 km stretch near Manali into a journey lasting up to ten hours.
That was an exceptional disruption, not the normal Bhuntar-to-Manali travel time. Do not plan around it, but do respect that winter here can go sideways fast.

First, an honest point. We could not find any verified universal government tariff for this route. Every fare you see, including ours below, is an indicative commercial rate, not an official fixed price.
With that clear, here is the current picture. A small hatchback like an Alto may be around ₹3,000. A sedan may run ₹3,000 to ₹3,500. An Ertiga or similar may be around ₹4,000.
An Innova may be around ₹4,500. An Innova Crysta may be around ₹5,000. A Tempo Traveller may be around ₹7,000.
Another current provider quotes a broader ₹3,500 to ₹4,500 range for the whole route. That gap between quotes is exactly why you should confirm the total fare in rupees before you sit in the car, not after.
Ask what the number actually covers. Airport parking, fuel, driver allowance, waiting time, luggage and the exact hotel drop should all be part of the quoted fare.
Hotels towards Solang, the Atal Tunnel road, or anywhere beyond central Manali may attract an extra charge. Sort that out before you book, not at the hotel gate.
Ask whether the fare is a total or per person, because a "per head" quote can double on you. Check which vehicle will actually arrive and how much luggage it holds, since a sedan and four large suitcases do not mix.
Confirm whether parking is included, whether flight-delay waiting charges apply, whether the drop to your exact hotel is covered, and what happens if you cancel. A driver who answers all of this cleanly is usually one you can trust.
During holidays and disruptions, some drivers quote wildly inflated fares knowing you have no other option. If a quote sits far above the ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 band for a normal car, walk away and ask someone else.

Taxis do wait outside. But Bhuntar is a small airport, and you should not assume availability during holidays, disruptions, or when you need a larger vehicle for a group.
We always recommend advance booking for families, groups, elderly passengers, honeymooners, late arrivals, and anyone landing with several suitcases. Turning up and hoping works fine on a quiet Tuesday and badly on a Diwali weekend.
Ola and Uber availability at Bhuntar Airport can be inconsistent, so do not rely on an app cab as your only option. Keep a pre-booked local taxi as a backup.

The bus is usually the cheapest way to do this trip.
You will likely need to reach the Bhuntar highway or local bus-stop area rather than boarding a dedicated shuttle right outside the terminal.
Here is the process. After you exit the terminal, ask airport staff or a local driver for the current Manali-bound boarding point.
Confirm the bus actually goes to Manali and does not just terminate at Kullu. Once you reach Manali, you may still need a local taxi or a short transfer to your hotel.
We are not going to claim there is a dedicated airport shuttle, because that has not been verified. Plan for a short walk or hop to the boarding point instead.
Local bus fares vary by service and operator, so confirm the current fare at the bus stand or directly with the operator before travelling.
You may have seen ₹549 quoted on a route-planning site, but that figure appears on a commercial platform and may relate to one specific bookable service, not the standard local fare. Do not lock your budget to it.
For realistic planning, allow about 2 to 3 hours once you account for reaching the stop, waiting, intermediate stops, traffic and the final hotel transfer. Treat that as a planning estimate, not a published timetable.
The bus works best for solo travellers with light luggage, daytime arrivals, and flexible schedules. If you can carry your bag on your shoulder and you are not racing the clock, it is a good, cheap choice.
A taxi is usually more practical for families with young children, elderly passengers, large suitcases, groups, and late arrivals. If your hotel is far from the Manali bus stand, the bus saving disappears fast once you add the last transfer.

Pick a private taxi if you want a direct hotel drop, comfort, room for luggage, flexible timing, or you are travelling as a group. It removes every handoff and drops you at the door.
Pick the bus if saving money is your main goal and you are travelling light. That is the honest trade-off, comfort versus cost.
Shared taxis may be available on this route, but availability and fares can vary by the day. Confirm locally before relying on one.
And if there are three or four of you, a private taxi becomes surprisingly reasonable once you split the total fare, often close to what a smooth bus-plus-transfer combo costs anyway.

The drive follows the Kullu-Manali corridor through the Beas Valley. The river stays with you for much of the way, and the apple orchards and pine slopes make the time pass.
You will roll through small settlements and market stretches, and you will hit mountain traffic in places, especially near the towns. It is a pretty drive, but it is a working highway, not an empty scenic road.
If you get motion sick, sit where you feel steadiest, skip a heavy meal right before the drive, and carry any medication only as your doctor or pharmacist advises. Keep your seat belt on, and avoid rushing a night drive in bad weather.

Central Manali is the standard reference point for the quoted 50 km distance. Most fares assume this drop.
Traffic restrictions and parking near Mall Road can affect exactly where the car stops. You may get dropped a short walk from the door during busy hours.
Narrow roads and congestion can affect access to both Old Manali and Vashisht. In peak season the lanes clog up badly.
Confirm with the driver whether the vehicle can actually reach the property entrance, or whether you will walk the last stretch with your bags.
For Prini, Naggar Road and other outskirt properties, the final distance and drop time vary a lot by hotel. Some are quick off the highway, some are a climb.
Same advice as before. Share a live map pin so the driver routes straight there.
Hotels towards Solang Valley and the Atal Tunnel side sit beyond central Manali. They usually mean more time and a higher fare.
We will not quote a precise supplement, because that has not been verified. Just agree to the extra with your driver upfront.
If you are staying that side for the snow and adventure, our guide to adventure activities in Manali is worth a read, and some travellers extend towards our Sissu tour options through the tunnel.

Bhuntar has limited, schedule-dependent flight operations, and mountain weather can affect services more than at a big-city airport.
Share your flight number with the driver, and update your transfer company the moment a delay or cancellation happens. And do not book a non-refundable activity for arrival day. We have seen too many people lose money on a booked activity because their flight slipped.
Heavy rain can trigger landslides, falling debris, temporary road closures and traffic holds across parts of Himachal.
Check same-day weather, district administration updates, and traffic-police notices before you set out. Conditions here change within a single afternoon.
Snowfall creates slippery roads, restrictions and long queues. Black ice on shaded stretches is the quiet danger drivers respect most.
Give yourself generous airport buffers in winter. A tight schedule and a snowy road are a bad match.
Peak-season congestion is a genuine problem in Manali. Local police raised concerns in 2026 about severe traffic pressure and proposed additional traffic-management measures.
To be clear, the proposed HRTC bus-stand relocation has not been confirmed as completed. Do not plan around it as if it is already done.

First, check your airline's rebooking and refund options. That is your cleanest fix and sometimes the fastest.
If flying in is off the table, Chandigarh is usually the most practical major-airport backup, though it means a much longer road journey to Manali. Delhi is another backup, but we will not throw an unverified road time or fare at you here.
Weigh a rescheduled flight against an overnight bus and a private road transfer before you commit. And during widespread disruption, do not accept a high-pressure, unverified taxi quote just because you feel stuck. That is exactly when overcharging happens.

When the flight operates normally, Bhuntar gives you the shortest road transfer. That is its whole advantage.
Chandigarh generally offers a wider choice of flights and better backup possibilities, but it comes with a much longer onward road journey to Manali.
Neither airport wins outright. Choose Bhuntar if a short road journey matters most to you. Choose Chandigarh if flight choice and flexibility matter more, especially in uncertain weather months.

Do not use the 1.5 to 2 hour driving estimate as your full departure buffer. That is the mistake that makes people miss flights.
As practical planning guidance, leave about 4 to 5 hours before your scheduled flight in normal conditions. This is our editorial advice, not an official airport rule.
Give yourself an even bigger buffer during monsoon, snowfall, holiday traffic, active weather warnings, or known road restrictions. And confirm the latest check-in deadline directly with your airline.

Save your driver's number before you fly, and share your flight number, passenger count, luggage count and hotel map pin. That single message prevents most arrival-day confusion.
Keep some cash on you, since not every dhaba or small transfer takes cards or UPI. Download an offline map, carry water, and confirm the vehicle size matches your group and bags.
Skip any non-refundable activity right after landing, and check the same-day weather and road situation before you set out.
If you are chasing snow, our guide to Snow in Rohtang Pass helps you time it, and travellers pairing Manali with a hill-station loop often look at our Shimla tour packages.
A coordinated package lines up the airport pickup, hotel check-in, sightseeing days and weather-dependent activities so nothing clashes on arrival.
We are based in Himachal Pradesh, and this is our home turf. In our experience, the smoothest Manali trips begin when the flight, pickup and first hotel night are planned together, not booked in three separate places that do not talk to each other.
If that sounds easier than juggling it yourself, our Manali tour packages put the whole first day on autopilot.
