Kinnaur & Spiti Bike Expedition with Lepcha La

Arrive around Shimla in the morning and meet the riding team. Today is intentionally easy. Freshen up, have breakfast, and complete the motorcycle allotment and documentation. Inspect the bike with the team, adjust your gear, and attend the road captain's briefing on convoy formation, hand signals, overtaking, fuel stops, and what to do if you get separated. Then take a short test ride to check the clutch, brakes, throttle, controls, and seating, and flag anything that does not feel right now, because that is exactly what the test ride is for. Once everyone is comfortable, ride the short stage to Narkanda. This day is about getting used to your motorcycle and the group, not about distance.

Your first full mountain riding day. After breakfast and the morning bike check, leave Narkanda and descend towards Rampur, where the road begins to follow the Sutlej as you enter Kinnaur. Continue to Karcham, then leave the main highway and turn up into the Baspa valley towards Sangla. Settle into the road captain's pace rather than rushing the mountains, take the planned meal, fuel, and comfort stops, and reach Sangla by late afternoon or early evening where conditions allow. You stay here for two nights.

Leave your main luggage at the stay. After breakfast, ride deeper into the Baspa valley towards Rakcham and then Chitkul. Keeping this as a separate day means you do not have to rush Chitkul during a long transfer towards Spiti. Enjoy the road, stop around Rakcham, and spend time in the upper valley where access allows. Later in the season, the Chitkul section can be affected by frost, ice, fresh snow, or temporary restrictions, and if the road is not suitable for motorcycles the road captain turns the group around at the safest practical point. Return to Sangla for your second night.

Today you move from the Baspa valley into the much drier landscape of Upper Kinnaur. Leave Sangla after breakfast and return towards Karcham, then follow the main highway deeper into the Sutlej valley through Upper Kinnaur towards Khab. Stop around Khab Sangam, where the Spiti and Sutlej rivers meet, when parking and road conditions allow. From Khab, begin climbing towards Nako. The greener valleys give way to the high-altitude cold desert here. Reach Nako, check in, and keep the evening quiet. Nako is already a high sleeping altitude, so avoid unnecessary exertion after arrival and tell the road captain at once if you develop a headache, nausea, unusual tiredness, or other altitude symptoms.

One of the signature days of the expedition. After breakfast and the morning bike check, leave Nako towards Sumdo. The planned highlight is Lepcha La, also known as Hangrang Pass, a sensitive border-area ride. Access depends on the applicable security permission, road surface, weather, local instructions, and the road captain's assessment. If access is available and the road is considered suitable for motorcycles, the group continues towards Lepcha La, following the photography and movement instructions in the border area exactly. If security access is unavailable, the road is unsuitable, or the timing no longer makes the detour sensible, the group skips Lepcha La and continues towards Tabo. The main expedition does not depend on reaching the pass. Continue to Tabo and visit Tabo Monastery when it is open. After the monastery and a lunch break, ride towards Kaza. Dhankar is not added automatically today; it may be considered only if Lepcha La was not attempted, the timing stays comfortable, and the road captain considers the detour suitable. Reach Kaza and settle in for two nights.

Leave your main luggage at the hotel. Today is about riding the high roads around Kaza. There are two circuits we consider: the preferred loop of Key Monastery, Kibber, and Chicham, and the alternate loop of Langza, Hikkim, and Komic. The road captain checks the actual conditions before choosing, because a road on one side of Kaza can be dry while another stays icy or affected by recent snow. So we promise one good local motorcycle circuit, not every village on the map. If conditions are especially good and enough daylight remains, more stops may be added as a bonus, not something to book the trip expecting. If the high-village roads are unsuitable for motorcycles, the route is shortened or changed.

The return journey begins. After breakfast and the motorcycle check, leave Kaza without adding another high-village circuit. Ride through the main Spiti corridor towards Tabo, Sumdo, and Khab. Gue and Pin Valley are not included. Take the planned fuel, meal, and comfort breaks, then continue towards Reckong Peo and Kalpa. This is a substantial riding day, and the goal is to reach Kalpa within usable daylight. If an unexpected closure or serious delay makes that impossible, the overnight halt may need to change.

Wake up to your final morning in Kinnaur. After breakfast and the final mountain bike check, ride towards Shimla through Reckong Peo, Karcham, Rampur, and Narkanda. No separate Roghi or sightseeing detours are built into today; the priority is reaching Shimla with enough time to complete the motorcycle handover properly. On arrival, return the rental motorcycle and complete the final condition inspection with the team, then collect your luggage from the support vehicle. Have dinner at your own expense and board the overnight Volvo towards Delhi. Own Bike Own Fuel riders finish the standard riding itinerary in Shimla unless another service has been added.

Arrive in Delhi in the morning. The exact time depends on the Volvo, traffic, and whether the mountain journey reached Shimla on schedule the previous evening, so avoid a tightly timed flight, train, exam, or important appointment right after. Ten days earlier you boarded a bus towards Shimla; you return after riding through Narkanda, the Baspa valley, Upper Kinnaur, and Spiti, attempting Lepcha La, spending two nights in Kaza, and completing the motorcycle journey back through Kalpa.
