Yulla Kanda Camping and Homestays in 2026: Stays, Toilets and Meals

Kinnaur18 minutes read
Yulla Kanda Camping and Homestays

Most people searching for Yulla Kanda camping and homestays don't need another trek guide. They want three answers: where they will sleep, what the toilet looks like, and whether hot food will be waiting after the climb.

The mistake we see most often is assuming the camp night will feel like the homestay night. Travellers expect an attached bathroom and a bucket of hot water up on the mountain. Plan for the difference between the two before you pack.

Quick Answer: Where Should You Stay at Yulla Kanda?

Yulla Khas village has homestays with simple rooms and home cooked food. Organised treks add tented camps higher up the mountain route.

Bathrooms, toilets and meals vary between properties and between camp operators. No single standard covers all of them.

Our published group tour includes one village homestay night, one alpine camp night with shared washrooms, and two breakfasts plus two dinners.

Don't assume every campsite has permanent toilets. Ask the operator exactly what they provide before you pay.

If you want one team to handle the homestay, camp and route together, look at our Yulla Kanda trek and camping package. We check conditions and arrangements before each departure.

Where Can You Stay During the Yulla Kanda Trek?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (10).jpg

You have three realistic options. They are a village homestay at the start, a tent on the mountain, or a backup stay around Tapri if your travel plan needs it.

Most trekkers combine the first two. Here is how each one works.

Homestays in Yulla Khas Village

Yulla Khas is the starting village in our itinerary. Sleeping there the night before your trek takes care of several things at once.

You get a proper room after the long road journey. You eat a cooked dinner without carrying a stove. You also get to ask local people about the trail before you set off.

In our experience planning Kinnaur trips, that conversation with your host matters most. Locals know if rain has turned a section slippery or if a stretch needs extra care that week.

Camping Along the Trek Route

A trek campsite is not a roadside campground with parking, a café and a power socket. It is a temporary setup on the mountain that an operator builds and runs for trekking groups.

Where you camp depends on the campsite location, the weather, local permissions and the operator you book with. Two groups on the same weekend can sleep in quite different setups.

If camping is new to you, our wider Kinnaur tour packages give a sense of how we plan around these mountain conditions.

Staying Around Tapri as a Backup

Some travellers book a stay around Tapri when their bus timings or road plans don't let them reach Yulla Khas the same evening.

We have not verified specific hotels, prices or availability there for 2026. If you need this option, ask your driver or operator to confirm a property before you leave Shimla.

What Are Homestays in Yulla Khas Village Really Like?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (13).jpg

Village homestays here are simple. Don't picture a hotel with a reception desk.

Expect a family run house, wooden interiors, heavy bedding and food cooked in the family kitchen.

Rooms, Bedding and Heating

Local providers describe traditional wooden rooms and warm bedding. That suits a cold Kinnaur night far better than a thin hotel quilt.

Heating, extra blankets, private rooms and spare mattresses depend on each property. One house might give you a room to yourself, while another puts three trekkers in one room.

Ask these questions before booking. Do not wait until you arrive tired at night.

Attached Bathrooms, Hot Water and Charging

One Yulla Khas homestay listing advertises attached bathrooms with hot water, charging points and luggage storage for trekkers.

That is one property's offer. It does not tell you what the house next door provides, and it does not promise hot water every hour of the day.

Here is an insider tip: Charge your phone and power bank fully at the homestay. In our experience, travellers forget to do this until they are already at camp, and nobody should expect a socket up there.

Examples of Advertised Homestays

Ayansh Snow-View & Trekker's Nest is one documented example. Its own website advertises stays from ₹700 per person with breakfast and dinner, and it asks guests to confirm current price, availability and inclusions.

Ayansh also mentions home cooked meals, guide support and camping equipment.

A separate Yulla Khas village listing advertises rooms, cooked food and bathrooms. Its displayed price has changed between versions, so treat any rate from it as unconfirmed.

To be clear, we have not inspected or endorsed either property. These are published offers, and you should confirm every detail directly with the host.

Where Can You Camp Near Yulla Kanda Lake?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (12).jpg

Organisers use temporary camping spots along the forest and meadow route below the lake. Camping near the route is very different from sleeping beside the sacred lake.

Campsites Along the Forest and Meadow Route

Your operator chooses the campsite for that season and that batch. Weather, permissions and group size all affect the choice.

We are not publishing exact campsite locations. We also cannot confirm that every meadow along the route is open for camping.

Sleeping Bags, Sharing Tents and Food Tents

Trekking operators commonly advertise shared tents, sleeping bags, mats and basic meals served from a kitchen or food tent.

Equipment differs between operators and between departures. Ask whether your sleeping bag suits cold nights, whether you get a mat underneath it, and how many people share your tent.

Is Camping Directly Beside the Lake Allowed?

We have not confirmed campsite specific permission rules for 2026. Please don't pitch a tent right beside the lake or the Krishna temple.

Skip the idea of a lakeside tent completely. Yulla Kanda is a sacred site, and the honest answer on permission is that we don't know enough to say it is allowed.

Use a locally approved location. Confirm permission with your organiser or the responsible local authority.

What Toilet and Washroom Facilities Are Available?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (33).jpg

This is the question we get asked most often, especially by women and first time trekkers. The honest answer depends on where you are on the route.

Facilities fall into three zones: the village homestay, the campsite and the trail between them. Each one works differently.

Homestay Toilets

At the village level you will find either an attached bathroom inside your room or a shared bathroom used by other guests or the family.

One documented Yulla Khas property advertises an attached washroom with hot water. That is the most comfortable toilet you will have on this trip.

Before booking any homestay, ask whether the toilet is Western style or Indian style. Ask whether water stays available through the evening and whether you will share the bathroom.

We have not verified toilet types at any specific property. Hosts answer these questions quickly when you ask directly.

Shared Toilets and Toilet Tents at Campsites

Our current package advertises shared camp washrooms at the alpine campsite.

The package page does not say whether these are permanent structures, flush toilets, or portable or dry setups. Please ask us before you pay so you know exactly what to expect.

What we tell our travellers is to ask five things in writing. They are the toilet type, the level of privacy, water availability, access at night and who cleans it.

Night access matters more than people think. Walking to a toilet tent at 2 AM in the cold needs a headlamp and a clear path, so check where the toilet sits compared with your tent.

Toilets During the Daytime Trek

This is the honest warning. A recent Reddit trip report says the traveller found no toilets beyond the entry gate.

That is one person's experience on one trip, not an official count of every facility. Still, plan as if you will find nothing between the start and camp.

Here is a timing tip that changes the whole day. Use the homestay toilet just before you leave, even if you don't feel the need. It is the last clean, private option you can count on.

Women's Hygiene and Responsible Waste Disposal

Carry a small hygiene kit in your daypack. Include menstrual products, hand sanitiser, tissues and a sealable bag for used items.

The sealable bag is the insider tip most guides miss. It lets you carry used pads, wet wipes and plastic back down without odour or mess, and it keeps the trail clean.

Never leave wet wipes, sanitary products or plastic on the trail or near the lake. They do not break down at this altitude, and the area is sacred to local people.

If you need privacy on the trail, move well away from the path and from water. Ask your trek lead what the group follows, because we can't confirm that any improvised outdoor arrangement is officially permitted at a specific spot.

What Food and Meals Can You Expect?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (24).jpg

Food on this trip is simple, filling and hot. Don't expect a menu card.

The real question is not what food exists but which meals your booking actually includes.

Dinner and Breakfast at Village Homestays

Accommodation guides commonly describe dal, rice, roti, sabzi and tea at village homestays.

Our food recommendation is the home cooked dinner at your Yulla Khas homestay the night before the trek. Eat a proper meal there, because it is the most reliable hot food you will get until camp.

Ayansh advertises breakfast and dinner with its stay. A property offering meals is different from your booking including them, so confirm which meals your rate covers.

Meals Served at Trekking Camps

One trekking guide mentions camp food such as parathas, Maggi, soup and snacks.

Treat that as an example, not a promised menu. Group camp food stays simpler than hotel food, and your operator decides what comes out of the kitchen tent.

Packed Lunches, Snacks and Dietary Requirements

Our advertised Yulla Kanda package includes two breakfasts and two dinners. It does not cover lunches.

So arrange a packed lunch before you leave the village. Ask your host the evening before rather than at breakfast, because a family kitchen needs time to prepare it.

Add nuts, biscuits and energy rich snacks to your daypack. We don't supply these, so buy them before you reach the village.

Tell us or your host about vegetarian needs, allergies or other food preferences well before the trip. Simple kitchens can adjust when they know early.

Is Drinking Water Available on the Yulla Kanda Trek?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (26).jpg

A recent traveller reports natural water points along the trail and recommends treating the water before drinking it.

We have not confirmed how reliable those sources are or whether they flow all season. Clear water from a mountain stream can still upset your stomach.

Carry your own water and a suitable purification option, such as tablets or a filter bottle.

Our package does not include bottled water. Ask your operator separately about drinking water at camp, because we can't assume an amount on their behalf.

A money saving tip

Carry a refillable bottle with purification tablets instead of buying bottled water along the road. It costs less, and you carry no plastic up a sacred trail.

How Much Do Yulla Kanda Homestays and Camps Cost in 2026?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (29).jpg

Prices here come from published offers, not a fixed market rate. Always check whether a quote is per person or per room.

That one question protects you from the most common booking confusion we see.

Advertised Village Homestay Prices

Ayansh Snow-View advertises a starting price of ₹700 per person with breakfast and dinner, subject to confirmation.

A separate Yulla Khas listing shows ₹1,000 per person in one version and ₹1,500 in an earlier version. The quotes differ, so confirm the current rate before you transfer anything.

An older Real Himachal guide gave ₹1,200 to ₹1,500 per shared room. That figure is historical and does not confirm any 2026 tariff.

Watch the wording closely. A per room price split three ways looks cheap, while the same number charged per person costs three times as much.

Our safety warning on payments: don't send an advance to an unknown number based on a screenshot or social media post. Confirm the host, the rate and the inclusions in writing, and call our team on +91-7018537498 if anything feels unclear.

Camping Prices and What They Include

The same older guide quoted ₹1,000 to ₹1,200 per person for camping with food. We have not verified that as a current 2026 rate.

A camping quote should tell you the tent sharing arrangement, bedding, washroom type, meals, guide support and any porter charges. Without those details, you can't compare two quotes fairly.

Travel Coffee's Published Package Prices

Our live package page lists ₹7,499 per person for triple sharing on the Delhi or Chandigarh options.

Double sharing costs ₹8,999 per person. Joining from Shimla saves you ₹1,000 per person, which is the easiest money saving move if you can reach Shimla yourself.

These are published prices. They depend on dates, availability and written confirmation.

A package covers transport, two stays, selected meals and trek support. You can't compare it directly with a one night homestay rate.

What Does Travel Coffee's Yulla Kanda Package Include?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (32).jpg

Here is exactly what our group tour covers and what it doesn't. We would rather you know now than feel surprised on the mountain.

Accommodation and Shared Washrooms

The package includes one night in a traditional Yulla Khas homestay and one night in a tented alpine camp.

The camp uses shared washrooms. Choosing double sharing does not automatically give you a private tent.

We confirm room and tent sharing with you before you pay. Ask us directly if a private tent matters to you.

Included Meals and Extra Expenses

You get two breakfasts and two dinners.

The package does not cover lunches, snacks, tea, coffee, bottled water, meals during overnight bus journeys or the first breakfast stop in Shimla.

It also doesn't cover porter or mule support unless you arrange it separately. Budget a little extra cash for these.

Tent Sharing, Luggage and Trek Support

The group travels with a trip captain and a local trek team.

Before your batch leaves, confirm the first aid arrangements, your sleeping equipment and how luggage moves between the homestay and camp.

For late season departures, we may adjust the plan for weather or safety. You can read every detail on our Yulla Kanda trek and camping package page.

Is a Homestay or Campsite Better for Your Trip?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (3).jpg

The answer depends on what you need to feel comfortable and how much camping you actually want.

A village homestay suits you if a real room, a cooked meal and an established bathroom matter most. It also suits slower walkers who want a proper rest before the climb.

An organised camp suits trekkers who don't mind sharing facilities and sleeping in a tent. You get the mountain night, the cold air and the early start closer to the lake.

Our team recommends combining both, which is how our group tour works. The homestay prepares you, and the camp gives you the mountain experience.

Beginners and solo travellers can do this trip with the right support. We won't promise that any booking is automatically safe, though. Your fitness, the weather and the support team all matter.

If you are travelling solo, ask how tent sharing works for your batch. Most solo travellers share with someone of the same gender, but confirm this before booking.

How Should You Plan Your Overnight Stay and Trek?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (5).jpg

Break the trip into three clear parts: arrive and rest, trek and camp, then descend with time to spare.

Arrive in Yulla Khas and Sleep at a Homestay

You reach Kinnaur through the Shimla, Narkanda and Rampur route.

Settle into your homestay, ask your host about trail conditions, and arrange your packed lunch before dinner.

Lay out your daypack that evening with water, snacks, a headlamp, your hygiene kit and a warm layer. Mornings move faster when you don't have to search for things.

Trek to the Camp and Visit the Lake if Conditions Allow

Our itinerary walks you towards camp first. If the weather, the trail and the group's pace allow, you continue to the lake and the Krishna temple.

We can't guarantee you will reach the temple. Mountains set their own schedule, and turning back for safety is a good decision, not a failure.

Our team describes the trek as roughly 12 km one way and the temple at about 3,895 metres. Another travel website reports a shorter round trip distance, so treat the trail length as uncertain.

Descend and Travel Back with Enough Time

On the last day you descend from camp and continue by road.

Our Shimla itinerary runs three days and two nights. The Delhi itinerary runs five days and four nights, including overnight transport.

Don't book a tight onward flight or train. Mountain roads cause delays, and you will want a buffer. If you have extra days, our Shimla tour packages make an easy add on.

What Is the Best Time for Camping at Yulla Kanda in 2026?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (6).jpg

Operators generally advertise a trekking season from roughly mid May to October.

Monsoon months can bring rain and slippery trails. Later in the year, nights get properly cold, and camp comfort depends heavily on your bedding.

We treat late October and November departures as conditional. We only confirm them when road, snow, trail and campsite conditions allow.

An honest road note for this month: Kinnaur district published an NH-05 Nathpa traffic regulation extension in September 2026, and that order ran only until 18 September 2026.

That expired order tells you nothing about today's road. Check the latest Kinnaur district notification, and ask your driver or homestay host about current access before you leave.

For more on travelling this month, read our Kinnaur in October travel guide.

Are Permits Required, and What Are the Camping Rules?

Yulla Kanda Kinnaur (7).jpg

Our package page states that Indian travellers don't need a special permit for our advertised base route.

A separate trekking website claims you need forest check post registration, a small entry fee and extra permission for overnight camping. We have not matched that against an official 2026 Forest Department source, so treat the fee and camping permission as unconfirmed.

These are three different things. Protected area permits, forest entry registration and campsite permission don't work the same way.

Foreign travellers should check the official Kinnaur guidance on protected area rules. Those rules cover separately notified restricted areas, so check your actual itinerary rather than assuming one permit covers the whole district.

The camping rules on the ground are simple. Leave no litter, follow campsite instructions, respect local religious customs and don't light unapproved fires.

We only hold bonfires when the weather and local permission allow. Never wash with soap in the lake.

What Should You Check Before Booking a Homestay or Camp?

Start with the homestay. Ask if your room has an attached toilet, if hot water comes on in the evening, if you will share the bathroom, and if you can charge your phone.

For the camp, ask how many people share a tent, what bedding you get and whether your sleeping bag suits cold nights. Then ask what toilet setup you will use and where it sits.

Next, cover food and water. Confirm which meals your booking includes, how you get drinking water and if the kitchen can handle your dietary needs.

Then ask the questions people skip. Where exactly is the campsite, and does the operator have local permission to use it? Who carries heavy luggage, and what does it cost?

Finally, check emergency support and cancellation terms. Mountain weather changes plans, so you should know what happens to your money if a trek stops halfway.

What we tell every traveller is to get the important answers in writing before payment. That means the amenities, the sharing arrangement and the inclusions. A WhatsApp message counts, and a phone call alone doesn't.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you stay overnight at Yulla Kanda Lake?

Organised camps operate in the trekking area below the lake. Don't assume you can camp right beside the sacred lake, though, because we have not confirmed lakeside permission for 2026. Sleep at an approved campsite your operator arranges and visit the lake during the day.

Are there homestays near the Yulla Kanda trek starting point?

Yes. Yulla Khas village, where our trek starts, has advertised homestays with rooms and home cooked meals. Facilities differ between houses, so ask each host about bathrooms, hot water and charging before you book.

How much does a Yulla Khas homestay cost in 2026?

Ayansh Snow-View advertises stays from ₹700 per person with breakfast and dinner, subject to confirmation. Another listing shows a different price in different versions, so check rates directly with your host. Always ask whether the price is per person or per room.

Are clean toilets available during the Yulla Kanda trek?

It depends on where you are. Village homestays offer the best bathrooms, and camps usually have shared or tent toilets. One traveller found no toilets beyond the entry gate, so use the homestay toilet before you start walking.

Do camping packages include shared or private washrooms?

Our package includes shared washrooms at the alpine camp. Ask us whether your batch has permanent or portable toilets before you pay. Other operators work differently, and Himalayan Hikers, for example, advertises toilet tents.

Are breakfast, lunch and dinner included in camping packages?

Our package includes two breakfasts and two dinners but no lunches, snacks, tea, coffee or bottled water. Pack lunch at the homestay before trekking. Other operators include different meals, so read each inclusion list carefully.

Can vegetarians get food during the Yulla Kanda trek?

Village homestays commonly serve dal, rice, roti and sabzi, which suits vegetarians well. Camp kitchens tend to keep menus simple too. Tell your host or operator about your food needs early so they can plan.

Is safe drinking water available at the campsite?

Don't assume it. Ask your operator how they provide drinking water at camp. A traveller reports natural water points on the trail, but treat that water before drinking, and carry your own bottle with purification tablets as a backup.

Do Yulla Kanda campsites have electricity or phone charging?

Don't count on electricity or charging at upper campsites. Some village homestays advertise charging points, so charge everything there. Mobile signal in this part of Kinnaur can also be patchy, so tell family your plan before you climb.

Can beginners and solo travellers camp at Yulla Kanda?

Yes, with honest preparation. Build basic fitness, book with a team that offers real trek support, and confirm tent sharing before payment. Accept that weather or pace may stop you short of the temple, and be ready to turn back.

Are permits required for overnight camping in 2026?

Information conflicts. We state that Indian travellers need no special permit for our base route, but another website mentions forest registration and camping permission. Confirm current rules locally before you travel, and foreign travellers should also check protected area requirements.

How far in advance should you book accommodation near Yulla Kanda?

There is no fixed deadline, but check availability early. Village homestays have limited rooms, and group departures and local festival dates fill them faster. Get your booking confirmed in writing well before you start the road journey.
