Kinnaur in November 2026: Weather, Snow Chances & 7-Day Trip Plan

Most people plan Kinnaur in November around two things: fresh snow and a drive to Chitkul. Neither is guaranteed, and that is exactly where trips go wrong.
Plan around the cold and the road instead. Do that, and November gives you quiet villages, clear skies and the Kinner Kailash range with far fewer people around.
Quick Answer: Is Kinnaur Worth Visiting in November 2026?
Yes, if you handle cold well and keep your plan flexible.
At Kalpa, IMD's long term November averages show a daily low of 1.5°C and a daily high of 13.8°C. These are historical averages, not a forecast for November 2026.
Fresh snowfall can arrive as the season turns, more often toward late November, but nobody can promise it for your dates.
Treat Chitkul as a "only if the road allows" day, and the rest of the trip still works even if it does not.
If you would rather hand the planning to a local team, our Kinnaur tour packages run from the Shimla side and leave room to change the plan around the weather.
What Is Kinnaur Weather Like in November?

The most reliable picture of Kinnaur weather in November comes from IMD's Kalpa climatology for 1971 to 2000.
It gives Kalpa a November mean daily minimum of 1.5°C and a mean daily maximum of 13.8°C.
The same data shows just 13.8 mm of total precipitation across the month and only 1.5 rainy days on average. On paper, November is a dry, cold month.
Here is the catch. These numbers belong to Kalpa. They do not automatically apply to every village in the district.
Altitude changes everything in Kinnaur. A village higher up, or deep inside a narrow valley, can feel colder and react to a weather system quite differently.
Kalpa in November
District Kinnaur lists Kalpa at 2,759 metres. That makes the IMD figures above your best planning benchmark for this part of the trip.
Expect properly cold mornings and properly cold nights. The midday sun can feel warm, but that warmth disappears fast once the shadows reach your hotel.
We will not give you an hour by hour temperature range for Kalpa, because no reliable source publishes one. Anyone quoting an exact 8 AM temperature is guessing.
One insider tip from our drives: dress so you can peel layers off at noon and pile them back on by late afternoon. In our experience, people who dress for the morning sweat at lunch, and people who dress for lunch shiver at sunset.
Sangla in November
Sangla sits at 2,621 metres, 17 km from Karcham. That puts it a little lower than Kalpa.
Still, we will not hand you a Sangla temperature range. No Sangla dataset as solid as the IMD Kalpa figures exists in our sources, and we would rather say that than make up a number.
Plan for cold at both ends of the day, just like Kalpa, and look at the Baspa Valley forecast before you drive in.
Chitkul in November
District Kinnaur calls Chitkul the last and highest village in the Baspa Valley. It sits at 3,450 metres, nearly 700 metres above Kalpa.
At that height, the weather turns faster and the cold bites harder. One snowfall can change the road within an afternoon.
That is why live road and weather updates matter more for Chitkul than for any other stop on this trip.
You may hear that Chitkul "closes on a fixed date in November." We have found no official fixed closing date, so do not build your plan around one.
Does It Snow in Kinnaur in November?

When people ask about Kinnaur November snowfall, they usually mean three different things. Separate them and your expectations get much clearer.
Snow on the High Peaks
This part is close to certain. A Himachal Pradesh government source says the higher peaks of Kinnaur stay snow covered throughout the year.
So yes, you will see white peaks from Kalpa. That is not the same thing as snow falling on you.
Fresh Snowfall While You Travel
The same government source says heavy snowfall in parts of Kinnaur generally begins around late November or early December. It then continues through March, sometimes into April.
That gives late November a better seasonal chance of fresh snow than the first week of the month. It describes a seasonal pattern, not a forecast for your dates.
Here is the timing tip that changes the trip: If fresh snow matters more to you than calm roads, aim for the last ten days of November.
If you want fewer weather surprises on the drive, travel earlier in the month and enjoy the snow on the peaks instead.
Snow Lying in the Villages
Finding snow piled up at village level in Kalpa, Sangla or Chitkul is a different matter. Nobody can promise that in November, and we will not either.
We also do not give a percentage chance of snow, because no reliable official figure exists. If someone sells you a "guaranteed snow" November package, walk away.
Are Kinnaur Roads Open in November 2026?

You check close to your travel date, every single time. District Kinnaur's own guidance warns that winter brings road blocks and tells you to get current road information before you set off.
This autumn shows exactly why.
What Happened on NH-05 This Autumn
On September 3, 2026, the District Magistrate extended temporary traffic regulations at the Nathpa Block Point on NH-05 for another 15 days, up to September 18, 2026.
That order has nothing to do with November. Do not treat it as a current restriction.
Then in late September 2026, shooting stones and mudflow disrupted NH-05 around Maling Nala near Tapri.
The lesson is simple. A road that looked fine in September tells you nothing certain about November.
The official notifications we checked do not show a November 2026 closure of NH-05. That still does not promise the highway stays open all month.
Why This Plan Uses the Shimla Side, Not Manali
District Kinnaur says the Manali to Kaza to Reckong Peo route stays closed during most of winter and spring. So this November plan runs fully along the Shimla and Sutlej Valley side.
District Kinnaur's How to Reach page puts Reckong Peo 235 km from Shimla. If you want a slow day in town before the climb, our Shimla tour packages make an easy starting point.
If Manali is also on your wish list, keep it as a separate trip. Our Manali tour packages work well on their own, but do not try to stitch Manali into a November Kinnaur road trip.
What We Tell Our Travellers About Road Checks
We tell every November traveller the same thing: check the road the evening before each drive, then again the morning you leave.
In our experience, that small habit saves more trips than any packing list. A road that looked clear at dinner can change by breakfast.
Is Chitkul Open in November?

No honest answer here is a flat yes or no. We have found no official fixed date when Chitkul closes in November.
What we do know: Chitkul sits at 3,450 metres, at the very end of the Baspa Valley road. That alone makes it the most weather sensitive stop on this trip.
How to Decide on the Day
Reconfirm the Chitkul road the evening before and again on the morning of your visit, because conditions can change quickly after snowfall, ice or road clearance work.
If locals or your driver say the road looks bad, believe them. Do not force the drive just because it sits on your itinerary.
The Fallback That Still Feels Like a Good Day
If Chitkul does not work, spend the day around Sangla and Rakchham instead. You stay in the Baspa Valley, you still see the river and the peaks, and you do not gamble on a risky road.
We have seen travellers push for Chitkul on a doubtful morning and spend the day stuck and stressed. The ones who switched to the Sangla side usually came back happier.
Do Not Assume Services Are Running
In the late season, do not assume hotels, restaurants or buses will run in Chitkul. Confirm your chosen stay and essential services directly before travelling, especially if you are visiting in the second half of November.
This is the honest downside of November. Even when you reach Chitkul, you may find fewer options than you expect.
Where Should You Stay in November: Kalpa, Sangla or Chitkul?

For this plan, make Kalpa or Reckong Peo your main base. The two sit just 14 km apart, which District Kinnaur describes as roughly a half hour drive.
That closeness gives you two sets of stay options in one spot. Winter road trouble can still reach this belt, so treat it as practical, not untouchable.
Sangla: Stay If the Valley Looks Good
Move to Sangla only if current Baspa Valley conditions look fine. If they do not, an extra night around Kalpa costs you far less stress than a night stuck on the wrong side of a blocked road.
Chitkul: Skip the Overnight in November
Here is the one thing we tell most November travellers to skip: the Chitkul overnight stay.
It is the highest and coldest stop, road conditions can change overnight, and some stays may reduce services or close for the season, so confirm heating, meals and availability directly before planning an overnight stay.
A Money Saving Tip on Stays
Book your Baspa Valley nights in Sangla, not Chitkul. If Chitkul turns out unreachable, you have not paid for a room you never sleep in.
Also ask every hotel about its cancellation terms for weather. A flexible booking is worth more in November than a slightly cheaper one.
Three Questions to Ask Every Hotel
Ask whether the property is actually operating on your exact dates. Ask whether room heating is available and whether there is any extra charge for it.
Then confirm whether the kitchen will be serving dinner and breakfast during your stay. We do not quote room rates or heater fees here because they vary by property and season.
7-Day Kinnaur Itinerary for November 2026

This Kinnaur winter itinerary keeps every day flexible. You will not find driving hours on each day, because November roads make fixed hours meaningless.
Use it as a frame. Swap days around if the weather or the road asks you to.
Day 1: Shimla to Narkanda
Start gently. A short first day lets your body settle into the hills and the cold before the longer drive.
Our drivers usually stop for hot chai and pakoras around Narkanda bazaar before check in. Since winter opening hours can vary, it is best to choose whichever local dhaba is open that evening.
Use the evening to check the road report for the next day's run into Kinnaur.
Day 2: Narkanda to Reckong Peo and Kalpa
This is your big travel day toward the main Kinnaur base. Start early so you drive the mountain stretch in daylight.
Once you reach Reckong Peo, Kalpa sits just 14 km further up. District Kinnaur describes that last stretch as roughly a half hour drive.
Check in, eat early and sleep early. The first night at Kalpa's altitude often feels colder than people expect.
Day 3: Kalpa Local Sightseeing
Keep today slow and local. Walk around Kalpa village, find your favourite viewpoint and spend time with the Kinner Kailash range in front of you.
An insider tip: do not plan anything big today. This rest day helps your body adjust and gives you a buffer if yesterday's drive ran late.
Before dinner, check Baspa Valley conditions for tomorrow. That one check decides your next two days.
Day 4: Kalpa to Sangla
Head down toward Karcham, then turn into the Baspa Valley for the 17 km run to Sangla. Go only after you confirm the valley road looks fine.
If the report looks bad, stay another night around Kalpa. Losing a day costs less than losing your nerve on a blocked road.
Day 5: Chitkul If Accessible, Sangla Valley Fallback If Not
This is the most important day of the plan, and Chitkul is not guaranteed in November.
Check the current road first thing in the morning. If your driver and locals say it is fine, go to Chitkul and come back to Sangla by the afternoon.
If they say no, spend the day around Sangla and Rakchham instead. You still get the Baspa Valley, without the risk.
Day 6: Sangla to Narkanda or Sarahan
Begin the return journey. Pick Narkanda or Sarahan for the night based on how the road and your energy feel that morning.
Do not squeeze another distant stop into today. Tired drivers and short November daylight make a bad mix.
Day 7: Return to Shimla
Drive back to Shimla and end the trip.
If you have a train or flight to catch, do not book it for the same evening. One landslide can hold a vehicle for hours, and an inflexible ticket turns a small delay into a lost booking.
Can You Combine Kinnaur and Spiti in November?

Do not assume the usual summer loop works in November. District Kinnaur says the Manali to Kaza to Reckong Peo route stays closed during most of winter and spring.
That means no full Shimla to Kinnaur to Spiti to Manali circuit. Anyone selling you that loop for November is selling a summer brochure.
If you want Spiti too, plan it as a separate extension from the Shimla side, built around current road conditions. Our Spiti Valley tour packages show how we usually structure those trips.
And if Chandratal is on your mind, it stays snowbound and shut through winter. Read our guide on when Chandratal opens in 2026 and save it for a summer trip.
What Should You Pack for Kinnaur in November?

Pack in layers, not in one giant jacket. With Kalpa's November average swinging from 1.5°C to 13.8°C, you need to add and remove warmth throughout the day.
Your Clothing Layers
Start with thermal base layers for top and bottom. Over that, carry a warm mid layer such as a fleece or a woollen sweater.
On top, bring insulated outerwear that blocks wind. Add gloves, a woollen cap and several pairs of warm socks.
We will not quote a jacket temperature rating, because no rating suits everybody and every village. Layering does the job better than any single number.
Shoes, Skin and Small Things
Wear sturdy footwear with good grip. Village lanes and viewpoints can turn slippery with frost.
Pack sunscreen and lip balm too. The mountain sun burns even when the air feels cold, and dry winter air cracks lips within a day.
Carry a reusable water bottle, a power bank and your personal medicines. Charging points and pharmacies thin out the deeper you go.
One Thing to Confirm Before You Pack
Call each hotel and confirm room heating directly. If a property cannot promise heat, pack one extra warm layer for sleeping.
Bus, Self Drive or Private Cab: What Works Best in November?

District Kinnaur says buses normally ply to the region. It also warns that winter and early spring road conditions can cause long breaks in service.
Taking the Bus
Buses keep the trip cheap, but they cannot wait for a road to clear on your behalf. Check the latest HRTC departure times at the bus stand or on the official booking platform before you travel.
If HRTC cancels a service, you may lose a full day. Plan for that if you choose the bus.
Self Drive
Self drive works for confident mountain drivers who check the road daily and stay off the wheel after dark. If you have never driven in the high hills, November is not the month to learn.
Private Cab
A private cab gives you the most room to change plans. If Chitkul looks bad that morning, your driver simply turns the day toward Sangla and Rakchham.
That flexibility matters more in November than in any summer month. Taxi rates vary by vehicle type, route and travel dates, so ask for a current quote instead of relying on a fixed online figure.
Do You Need a Permit for Kinnaur?

For the standard Kalpa, Sangla and Chitkul trip, nothing in the official district guidance we rely on says every Indian tourist needs an Inner Line Permit.
The permit rule applies in a different context. District Kinnaur's tourist guidelines say foreign visitors need the relevant permission for notified protected areas.
Nako and the Pooh Block
Nako appears in the official protected Pooh Block list. So if a foreign traveller in your group plans to go that far, sort the permit first.
The district page lists an Inner Line Permit fee of ₹200 per person at the e Governance Centre, plus any applicable travel agency service charges. Check the latest permit procedure and fee before travelling, as requirements can change.
A Warning About Permit Overcharging
Here is our safety warning. The official fee is ₹200 per person, and agency service charges come on top only if you use an agency.
If someone demands a much bigger "permit fee" without showing a receipt, ask for the official breakdown. And if anyone tells an Indian traveller on the normal Kalpa and Sangla route to pay for an ILP, ask them to show the rule in writing.
Important 2026 Safety Update: Kinnaur Kailash Yatra

The District Administration has postponed the Kinnaur Kailash Yatra 2026 until further orders.
The official reasons include glaciers, unstable boulders, continuous rockfall risk, landslides and falling debris along the pilgrimage route.
This restriction covers the Kinnaur Kailash pilgrimage route. It does not mean normal tourism in Kalpa, Sangla or the rest of Kinnaur has stopped.
You can still look at the Kinner Kailash range from Kalpa. Just do not attempt the yatra route while the postponement stands.
Who Should Visit Kinnaur in November?
Go if you handle cold well, enjoy flexible routing and feel fine with the chance of no fresh snowfall at all.
You will likely enjoy dry days, clear peaks and a slower pace, as long as you treat the plan as a draft rather than a contract.
Who Should Pick Another Month
If you need guaranteed snowfall, guaranteed Chitkul access or a fully rigid road schedule, November may disappoint you. Rethink the timing rather than fight the season.
Plan Kinnaur in November the Smart Way
Base yourself around Kalpa, keep Chitkul optional, check the road every evening and every morning, and pack in layers. Do those four things and Kinnaur in November rewards you.

It can, especially toward late November, but nobody can promise it. Plan to enjoy snow on the peaks and treat fresh snow in the village as a bonus.
What is Kalpa's temperature in November?

Are Kinnaur roads open in November?
