Himachal Winter Packing List 2026-27: What to Carry for Town Stays and Snow Day Trips

Most people pack for Himachal in winter as if cold is the only problem. It isn't. In town, you need warmth. In snow, you need warmth and dryness, and that second part changes your shoes, gloves, socks and daypack.
This Himachal winter packing list splits the two clearly. You will know what works from your existing wardrobe, what extra you need for a snow day, and what you can skip.
Quick Answer: What Should You Pack for Himachal in Winter?
Pack thermal innerwear, a fleece or wool sweater, a properly insulated jacket, warm socks, a cap, gloves and shoes with good grip.
That covers town stays in Shimla, Manali or Dharamshala.
For a snow outing, add waterproof boots, warm waterproof gloves, water resistant trousers or a snow suit, and a spare pair of dry socks in your daypack.
How Is Packing for a Himachal Town Stay Different From a Snow Day Trip?

Here is what most tourists get wrong. They buy one huge jacket and assume the job is done.
Then they spend an hour playing in the snow in canvas shoes and cotton gloves, and their feet stay wet and cold for the rest of the day.
Himachal Tourism treats December, January and February as the main winter season. Within those months, a day on The Mall and a day at a snow point need different kits.
Town Stays in Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala
A town day means short walks between your hotel, the market, Mall Road, cafes and viewpoints. You step in and out of warm rooms all day.
So you want layers you can open, remove and add back in a minute. A thermal top, a sweater and a zip jacket do this better than one heavy coat.
Town sightseeing does not automatically mean deep snow. Some winter days you will see only cold, dry streets.
On other days, snowfall or icy patches can turn a simple walk on a slope into a slippery one. Your shoes matter even in town.
If you plan to base your trip around the hills of the capital, our Shimla winter trips page shows how we usually pace a cold weather stay there.
Snow Outings to Kufri, Solang Valley and the Lahaul Side
A snow day is different. You stand in snow, walk through slush, sit on it for photos and scoop it up with your hands.
Snow melts against warm skin and fabric. Your socks get wet, your gloves soak through, and wet clothing pulls heat from your body fast.
The CDC warns that cold and wet conditions together raise the risk of hypothermia and frostbite. That is why a snow day needs waterproof protection, not just more sweaters.
Surfaces also get slippery. Packed snow near popular spots can turn icy where many people walk over it.
Lahaul side outings, including Sissu, work only when the road is open and local rules allow tourism. Never treat them as fixed parts of a winter itinerary.
For snow outings from the Kullu side, our Manali travel packages keep the snow day flexible for exactly this reason.
What Is the Best Three Layer Clothing System for Himachal Winter?

The CDC recommends dressing in several layers: an inner layer that handles moisture, an insulating middle layer and a protective outer layer.
This system works well in Himachal because you can adjust it all day.
Base Layer for Warmth and Sweat Management
Your thermals sit against your skin. They trap a thin layer of warm air and move sweat away from your body.
The CDC names wool, silk and polypropylene as better choices than absorbent cotton when you stay active in the cold. Cotton holds moisture and stays damp.
You don't need to ban cotton from your bag. A cotton T-shirt is fine for a cafe visit in town.
But for a long snow day, wet cotton next to your skin makes you colder, so wear proper thermals underneath.
Mid Layer for Insulation
The middle layer holds warmth. A fleece jacket or a wool sweater both do the job well.
On an uphill walk in Shimla or Dharamshala, you will warm up quickly. Take the fleece off before you start sweating.
When you stop at a viewpoint, put it back on. This small habit keeps you dry and comfortable far better than overdressing.
Outer Layer for Wind and Moisture
People often confuse two different jackets. A padded or down jacket gives insulation. A waterproof shell blocks wind, rain and wet snow.
Many puffer jackets resist light snow but are not fully waterproof. Check the label and the seams before you count on yours in wet conditions.
For town, a good padded jacket usually works. For snow play, a water resistant shell over your insulation keeps the warmth inside.
Your lower half needs the same thinking. Thermal leggings under trousers work in town, but snow play calls for water resistant outer trousers or a snow suit.
The whole aim is to stay dry. A dry person in three modest layers stays warmer than a wet person in an expensive jacket.
What Clothes Should You Carry for a Winter Stay in Shimla, Manali or Dharamshala?

Himachal Tourism recommends heavy woollens and jackets for Shimla's cold season, which runs through winter and into March.
For context, the IMD recorded a minimum of minus 0.5°C in Shimla on 24 January 2026. That is one documented night, not an average or a forecast, but it shows how cold town nights can get.
Daytime Sightseeing and Walking
A simple daytime outfit for both men and women looks like this: a thermal top and bottom, a fleece or sweater, comfortable trousers and a proper winter jacket.
Add a woollen cap, gloves and a muffler. Your ears and fingers feel the cold first on windy viewpoints.
You will need fewer layers indoors and while walking briskly. Keep the outer layers easy to remove so you don't overheat in a warm cafe.
Himachal Tourism also notes that Manali's weather can change abruptly, with thunderstorms and sudden snowfall. Keep your cap and gloves in your jacket pocket even on a sunny morning.
Cold Evenings and Hotel Stays
Evenings and early mornings bring the sharpest cold. Pack warm sleepwear, a pair of thick socks for bedtime and indoor slippers.
Hotel heating varies a lot. Before you book, ask whether your room has working heating, reliable hot water and enough bedding.
Some properties charge extra for room heaters. Ask about this charge at the time of booking so it doesn't surprise you at checkout.
If your trip includes the Kangra side, our Dharamshala tour options list stays where we confirm these basics in advance.
What Extra Clothes and Accessories Do You Need for a Snow Day Trip?
This is where your packing changes the most. A snow day needs gear that keeps water out.
Waterproof Protection for Snow Activities
Carry warm waterproof gloves. Woollen gloves feel cosy until you touch snow, and then they soak through within minutes.
Wear snow appropriate boots, water resistant trousers and a wind resistant jacket or shell over your insulation.
Think about how long you will stay in the snow. A fifteen minute photo stop needs far less gear than two hours of sledging and snowball fights.
Fit matters as much as material. Gloves that feel too tight cut circulation, and boots that pinch make your feet colder.
The CDC advises against staying in wet clothes in the cold. If your gloves or socks get soaked, change them rather than toughing it out.
What Should Stay in Your Snow Daypack?
Carry a separate small daypack on snow days. Your main bag stays at the hotel.
Inside, keep two pairs of spare socks, one dry thermal top or fleece, a bottle of water, snacks, your regular medicines and a fully charged power bank.
Put your phone, cash and documents in a waterproof pouch or a zip bag. Melting snow finds its way into pockets.
Pack a small plastic bag for wet gloves and socks. It keeps the rest of your daypack dry on the drive back.
One habit we tell every traveller: have a hot breakfast and a cup of chai in town before you leave for the snow point. A full stomach keeps you warm longer than any extra layer.
Sun Protection While Enjoying Snow
Snow gets cold, but the sun still burns. The WHO says snow can reflect as much as 80% of ultraviolet radiation.
That means UV hits you from above and from the ground at the same time. Faces, noses and lips burn quickly.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends sunglasses that block at least 99% of UV rays to help prevent photokeratitis, also called snow blindness.
Pack sunscreen and an SPF lip balm too. Reapply after you wipe snow or sweat off your face.
If you plan activities like skiing or snow tubing around Manali, our guide to Manali adventure activities explains what each one involves.
Which Shoes Are Best for Himachal Winter and Snow?

Your shoes decide whether you enjoy the day or spend it tiptoeing. Himachal towns sit on slopes, and steps and pavements turn slippery in wet weather.
Shoes for Dry or Wet Town Streets
In town, pick comfortable shoes with good grip and some protection from wet ground. Trekking shoes or sturdy sports shoes with deep tread usually work.
Avoid brand new shoes. Break them in at home so you don't get blisters on Shimla's steep lanes.
Boots for Snow, Slush and Icy Patches
For snow, the CDC recommends waterproof shoes with good traction in wet conditions. Choose boots with enough room for warm socks.
Canvas shoes soak through quickly. Smooth soled fashion boots slide on packed snow. Many light trainers do both.
No sole stays completely slip proof on ice. Walk slowly on icy patches, take short steps and keep your hands free rather than in your pockets.
What Socks Should You Wear?
Wool or synthetic socks keep your feet warmer than cotton ones, especially once they get damp.
Change wet socks as soon as you can. That is why we keep spare dry pairs on every snow day list.
Skip the trick of wearing two tight pairs at once. If your boots feel cramped, blood flow drops and your feet get colder, not warmer.
How Many Clothes Should You Pack for a Four or Five Day Himachal Winter Trip?

This depends on your weather, activities, cold tolerance and whether you can wash and dry clothes at your hotel. Use the numbers below as a sample, not a rule.
Example Packing Quantities for an Ordinary Town Stay
One published five day Manali packing example suggests two thermal sets, two insulating tops, two pairs of trousers, three full sleeved tops and five pairs of socks.
For a typical town trip, we find a similar shape works: two thermal sets, one or two fleeces or sweaters, two pairs of practical trousers, one warm jacket, a cap, gloves and around five pairs of socks.
Add enough underwear and personal clothing for your number of days. Outer layers stay clean for days, so you don't need a fresh jacket for each outing.
Extra Items for a Planned Snow Day
A snow day adds different items, not just another sweater. Add suitable boots, a water resistant outer layer or snow suit, waterproof gloves and a full spare set of dry clothes.
This one change to your kit does more for your comfort than stacking two extra sweaters.
How to Pack Without Overloading Your Bag
Wear your bulkiest jacket and boots while travelling. They take the most space in a bag and you need them on arrival anyway.
Keep dry clothes and wet clothes apart. A couple of zip bags or a laundry bag solves this.
Keep your medicines, charger, documents and one warm layer near the top of your bag. You don't want to unpack everything at a cold roadside stop.
Which Toiletries, Medicines and Electronics Should You Carry?
Cold, dry air affects your skin, lips and your phone. A few small items prevent most problems.
Skin Care and Personal Medicines
Pack a good moisturiser, sunscreen and an SPF lip balm. Cold wind dries and cracks skin quickly.
Carry your regular prescription medicines in their original strips, with enough for a few extra days in case of delays.
A modest first aid kit with band aids and basic supplies covers most minor needs. Add tissues, wet wipes and your usual hygiene products.
For any altitude or health related medicine, speak to your own doctor before the trip. We don't recommend specific drugs or doses.
Phone, Charging and Navigation
Apple says very cold conditions can temporarily shorten iPhone battery life and may even make the phone switch off. Other phones can struggle in the cold too, so plan for it.
Keep your phone in an inner pocket close to your body rather than in an outer jacket pocket.
Carry a fully charged power bank. Download offline maps and save your hotel address and important numbers before you leave town, since signals can drop on mountain roads.
Should You Buy, Borrow or Rent Snow Jackets and Boots in Himachal?

You don't need to buy a full snow wardrobe for one winter holiday. Think about what you will use again.
What Is Worth Bringing From Home?
Bring thermals, socks, gloves you know fit well and the winter jacket you already wear. Personal items like these work better when they fit you properly.
For an occasional trip, borrow a waterproof jacket or boots from family or friends. This saves money and suitcase space.
What Might Be Rented Locally?
Travellers in 2026 reported renting snow suits and snow boots around Manali. This gives you an option for a single snow day.
Treat it as a possibility, not a promise. Rental shops may not operate at every location or on every day.
Here is the honest part. Rented gear can feel damp, smell used or fit badly. Check the waterproofing, try the boots with your own socks and confirm the price before you pay.
We have no reliable standard rental rate for this winter, so ask about the price on the spot. Agree on it before you take the gear.
Our money saving tip: if you only plan a short photo stop in snow, skip the snow suit rental entirely. Waterproof gloves and decent boots will cover you, and you keep that money for a hot meal instead.
What Should Families With Children or Older Travellers Pack?
The CDC lists babies and older adults among the groups that need extra precautions in cold weather. Plan their kit with a little more care.
Packing for Children
Dress children in warm layers that fit well. Oversized gloves and boots let snow in and make little hands colder.
Carry extra dry socks and gloves for each child, plus a full change of clothes. Children get wet in snow faster than adults.
Keep snacks and water handy. Watch for shivering, crying from cold or very red or pale fingers, and head indoors early if you see them.
The CDC says shivering, confusion and severe numbness need attention. If you suspect a serious cold injury in anyone, seek medical help.
Packing for Older Family Members
Pack every regular medicine with enough for extra days. Bring comfortable footwear with a firm grip that supports steady walking.
Choose short walking distances and avoid long standing time in snow. Confirm room heating before booking.
This is general travel advice. Anyone with an existing health condition should check with their doctor before a winter trip.
What Should Be in Your Overnight Bus Bag or Winter Road Trip Kit?

Most winter trips to Himachal involve a long road journey. Your main suitcase usually goes in the luggage hold or the boot, out of reach.
Essentials for a Winter Bus Journey
Keep a small bag with you. Put in a warm layer, a pair of thick socks, water, snacks, your phone charger, medicines and your ID.
Buses and taxis can get cold at night, especially in the early morning hours before you reach the hills.
Supplies for Unexpected Road Delays
Winter roads can close without much warning. Keep extra dry clothing, warm socks, dry snacks, drinking water, a torch and a charged power bank easy to reach.
January 2026 showed why. After snowfall, The Indian Express reported 685 roads blocked across Himachal on 24 January, and The Tribune reported more than 1,290 disrupted roads in its coverage on 25 January.
These figures came from different points during that disruption. Authorities also placed temporary vehicle restrictions on some snowy routes during that event.
If police stop vehicles or close a road, follow their instructions. Don't push towards a closed snow route.
Save these numbers before you travel. The HP State Disaster Management Authority lists 112 for emergencies, 108 for ambulance and 1070 for the State Emergency Operation Centre.
Here is a safety warning we repeat often: Anyone offering to take you past a closed road for extra money puts you at real risk. Say no and turn back.
How Do You Check Snowfall, Road Conditions and Permits Before a 2026 to 2027 Winter Trip?
Winter brings cold and the possibility of snow, but nobody can guarantee snowfall on your dates. Plan with live information.
Snowfall in Towns Is Not Guaranteed
Shimla saw its first snowfall of that January 2026 spell on 23 January 2026. Many visitors who came earlier that month saw cold weather without snow in town.
So don't plan around "January means snow." Check the forecast instead.
The IMD runs an official Shimla weather centre with forecasts and warnings. Check it a few days before, the evening before your snow day and again in the morning.
This timing tip changes trips. When you check the night before, you can swap your snow outing with a town day and avoid driving into a closed road or a whiteout.
Rohtang Pass, Atal Tunnel and Sissu Access
Himachal Tourism describes Rohtang Pass as normally closed by heavy snow from late November, with reopening generally around May. That pattern doesn't fix any exact date.
When the tourist route runs, you need a separate Rohtang tourism vehicle permit from the official Rohtang permit portal.
The Atal Tunnel is a different route from the pass. But heavy snow can still cut connectivity near the tunnel, as it did between Manali and Lahaul in January 2026. Check tunnel access for your exact date.
Lahaul and Spiti also run the e-Aagman vehicle entry system. This is not the same thing as a Rohtang tourism permit, so don't mix them up.
Sissu paused tourism activities from 20 January to 28 February 2026 for local religious observances. Whether this repeats in 2027 is unconfirmed.
Our team recommends checking access before setting out, every single time. The Lahaul and Spiti district road status page has shown inconsistent information between its English and Hindi versions, so confirm with a second dated source.
Deep winter Spiti is a different trip altogether. Himachal Tourism notes temperatures can drop to around minus 20°C in some places there, which needs far more planning than this town and snow day kit.
What If the Snow Day Destination Is Unavailable?
Keep your plan flexible. If the road to your snow point is closed, swap the day for town sightseeing and try again later if conditions improve.
Respect local restrictions and check district advisories for your date. A four wheel drive vehicle does not make a closed road safe.
For seasonal context on the pass, read our Rohtang Pass in March guide. If Lahaul opens up during your dates, our Sissu trip options show how we fit it in safely.
What Should You Avoid Packing or Wearing in Himachal Snow?

A few common choices make a snow day miserable. Most of them come from packing for photos instead of conditions.
Common Clothing Mistakes
Smooth soled shoes slide on snow and ice. Fashion jackets often look warm but let wind and wet snow through.
Denim works fine for a dry town visit. For long snow play, it soaks up water, stays wet and turns stiff and cold.
The biggest mistake we see is staying in damp socks or gloves for hours. Change them. That one step prevents most cold discomfort.
Unnecessary Purchases
A short town holiday rarely needs expensive technical snow equipment. You don't need expedition jackets, crampons or high altitude sleeping bags for Kufri or Mall Road.
Skip the long online "ultimate snow gear" checklists. Choose equipment based on your actual itinerary, not on someone else's mountain expedition.
We suggest packing for the coldest outing on your itinerary, then checking if your existing clothes already cover it. Usually they cover most of it.
Final Himachal Winter Packing Checklist
For a town stay in Shimla, Manali or Dharamshala, carry thermals, a fleece or sweater, a warm jacket, comfortable trousers, a cap, gloves, a muffler, warm socks and shoes with good grip. Add sleepwear, slippers, moisturiser, sunscreen, medicines and a power bank.
For a snow day, add waterproof boots, waterproof gloves, water resistant trousers or a snow suit, UV blocking sunglasses and a daypack with spare socks, a dry layer, water, snacks and a waterproof pouch for your phone.
As a Shimla based travel team, we recommend one rule above all. Pack clothes that keep you warm, but make sure your snow day clothes also keep you dry.

Carry thermals, a fleece or sweater, an insulated jacket, warm socks, a cap, gloves and shoes with good grip. Add waterproof gear if you plan a snow day.
Are thermals necessary in Shimla in December or January?
Yes, for most travellers. Shimla nights get very cold, and thermals keep you warm without bulky layers.
How many jackets do I need for a Manali winter trip?
One good insulated jacket usually works. Add a waterproof shell or rent a snow suit if you plan long snow play.
Can I wear jeans in Shimla or Manali during winter?
Yes, for dry town days with thermals underneath. Avoid jeans for long snow play because denim soaks up water.
Are normal sports shoes suitable for walking in snow?
Not really. Most get wet quickly and slip on packed snow. Waterproof boots with deep grip work much better.
Do I need waterproof snow boots for Solang Valley or Kufri?
For more than a short photo stop, yes. Wet feet make the whole day cold and uncomfortable.
Can I rent snow jackets and boots in Manali?
Travellers have reported renting snow suits and boots around Manali. Check fit, waterproofing and price before paying.
What should I pack for a four or five day Himachal trip?
Two thermal sets, one or two warm tops, two trousers, one jacket, a cap, gloves and around five pairs of socks is a good sample.

Yes. Himachal Tourism recommends heavy woollens and jackets for Shimla's cold season, which includes December.
What should I carry for children or elderly parents travelling to Himachal in winter?
Carry well fitting warm layers, spare dry socks and gloves, snacks, water and all regular medicines. Keep outdoor time short.
Is a snow suit necessary for sightseeing in Manali?
Not for town sightseeing. Consider one only if you plan to spend a long time sitting or playing in snow.
What should I keep in my day bag for a snow excursion?
Spare socks, a dry layer, water, snacks, medicines, a power bank and a waterproof pouch for your phone and cash.
