Know Before You Go
- Walking: Most sightseeing involves a walk from the vehicle drop point, on slopes, steps and uneven ground that can be slippery when wet. The walks are easy to moderate, not technical treks, and you can sit one out. Carry comfortable walking shoes.
- Transport: Delhi to Aut and back is by overnight Volvo. Inside the valley we use a Tempo Traveller, Sumo or SUV by group size and road, changing vehicles at Aut. The Aut drop point and the return Aut boarding point are shared before travel and may differ, so follow the reporting time and reach your boarding point on time so you do not miss the Volvo.
- Trip captain: Groups of more than 10, the Social Group and Full Batch, travel with a dedicated trip captain from Aut until the return Volvo handover. Smaller groups of up to 10 do not have a separate captain and are looked after by the local driver and our team on call. Our trip coordinator helps with Volvo boarding on both journeys.
- Stay: A budget hotel or homestay in Sainj Valley, both nights at the same property. Your property may be in Shangarh or elsewhere in Sainj Valley, confirmed before departure. Check-in follows the property's policy, so early check-in on the arrival morning is not guaranteed, though you can drop bags and freshen up.
- Arrival morning: We usually stop near Aut to freshen up and have breakfast, at your own cost, before driving into the valley. If the Volvo runs late, we drive straight to your stay and have lunch there instead.
- Meals: 2 breakfasts and 2 dinners are included, on both stay nights. The arrival-morning breakfast, all lunches, and the dinners on the overnight journeys are on you, so keep some cash handy.
- Pace and plan: This is a slow trip for a small group, so we keep to the plan and do not add filler stops. Day by day the sightseeing can shift for your arrival time, road and trail access and delays. The Shangarh day, with the village, the Shangchul Mahadev Temple and the meadow, is the main highlight, so we protect it. Day 4 sights also depend on access, and we protect the drive back to the Volvo.
- Rafting: Optional, not included and not guaranteed. Only if time allows on Day 4 and the whole group agrees, paid by those taking part, and never at the risk of missing the return Volvo.
- Bonfire: An evening bonfire at your stay can be arranged on request if the weather allows, at an additional cost. It is not included.
- Season: For November departures, pack warm layers. Hikes stay in the morning where we can, we leave the meadow earlier for the light, and the property keeps warm bedding and hot water ready for the colder nights.
- Festival traffic: Dates around 21 to 27 October fall in the Kullu Dussehra window, so expect heavier highway traffic and plan for a little extra time.
- Connectivity: Mobile signal is patchy in the valley. Jio works in places and BSNL is usually better. Tell your family before you head in and download offline maps.
- Cash and ATMs: There are no ATMs near Shangarh, so carry enough cash for meals, personal expenses and anything unplanned.
- Weather: Mountain weather changes quickly, so carry a jacket and a rain cover even if Delhi looks clear.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this trip good for solo travellers?
Yes. Most people on this trip are solo travellers or small friend groups who want to see Sainj Valley and Shangarh without planning every detail themselves. It runs as a small group with prearranged local transfers, and the larger batches travel with a dedicated trip captain, so it is easy to join on your own.
How does the transport work on this trip?
Delhi to Aut and back is by overnight Volvo. Inside the valley we use a Tempo Traveller, Sumo or SUV by group size and road, changing vehicles at Aut. Groups of more than 10 travel with a dedicated trip captain to the return handover; smaller groups of up to 10 do not. The Aut drop and return boarding point may differ, so reach yours on time.
Can I join from Chandigarh or Manali instead of Delhi?
Yes. Chandigarh travellers board the same overnight Volvo at a Chandigarh point on the first evening and get off earlier on the way back, so it costs a little less. A Manali start and end is also available with a separate Manali pickup and drop, so it costs a little more. Check with the team for exact points and timing.
What sights are covered on the trip?
On arrival day, after you settle in, you walk to Pundrik Rishi Lake and Temple from Deori village. The next day covers the Barshangarh Waterfall, the Shangarh village walk with the Shangchul Mahadev Temple, and the Shangarh Meadow. On the last valley day you visit the Raila Twin Towers and Rupi Raila Waterfall on the way out.
Do vehicles reach every attraction?
No. Vehicles can only reach designated road-accessible points. From there you walk to attractions such as the waterfalls, the meadow, the temples and Pundrik Rishi Lake. Some paths have slopes, steps and uneven ground. Carry comfortable walking shoes and be ready for walking during sightseeing.
How difficult are the walks?
Easy to moderate, not technical treks. Most sightseeing involves a walk from the vehicle drop point, since vehicles reach only road-accessible points. The Pundrik Rishi walk is through deodar forest, and the waterfalls and the Twin Towers are short walks on uneven ground that can be slippery when wet. Good shoes and basic fitness help, and you can sit one out.
Are both waterfalls covered?
Yes. The Barshangarh Waterfall is planned on the Shangarh and meadow day, and the Rupi Raila Waterfall on the final valley day on the way out. Both are scheduled, and both go ahead subject to weather, timing and road and trail access on the day. If access is not safe or open, we rework the plan rather than rushing the group.
Is rafting part of this trip?
Rafting is optional, not included and not guaranteed. We can consider it only if time allows on the final day and the whole group agrees. It costs extra and is paid by the travellers taking part, and it depends on operating conditions on the day. It must never risk missing the return Volvo, so we only do it when the timing is comfortable.
What kind of stay is included?
A vetted budget hotel or homestay in Sainj Valley, with clean rooms, simple mountain comfort and food from local kitchens. Shangarh is a village within Sainj Valley, so your property may be in Shangarh or elsewhere in the valley, confirmed before departure. Both nights are at the same property, with breakfast and dinner included.
What room sharing options do you have?
Choose triple, double or single sharing. Triple is the most economical with three to a room, double gives more privacy with two to a room, and single is a private room at a premium. Pick what suits you on the booking widget, subject to availability at your stay.
Is this trip good for couples?
Yes. It works well for couples who want an offbeat Himachal weekend away from the crowds of Manali, Kasol or Jibhi. The pace is relaxed, the setting is scenic and the walks are easy to moderate.
What is the best time to visit, and what should I expect in October and November?
These batches run through October and November 2026, a lovely time in the valley. October uses the base timing. In November the days are shorter and colder, so hikes stay in the morning, we leave the meadow earlier for the light, and you should pack warm layers. The property keeps warm bedding and hot water ready.
What meals are included?
2 breakfasts and 2 dinners, on both stay nights: dinner on Day 2, breakfast and dinner on Day 3, and breakfast on Day 4. The arrival-morning breakfast, all lunches, and the dinners on the overnight Volvo journeys on Day 1 and Day 4 are not included, so you eat on your own at local spots and highway stops.
Is there mobile network in the valley?
It is patchy. Jio works in some spots and BSNL is usually more reliable in remote Himachal. Let your family know before you head into the valley and download offline maps if you rely on them.
Are there ATMs near Shangarh?
Do not count on ATMs near Shangarh. Carry enough cash for meals, snacks, personal expenses and anything unplanned.
