Reach Shimla in the morning. Today is kept free on purpose, so you can recover from the overnight journey before heading into the mountains. Drop your luggage at the hotel, and once you are settled, the day is yours. Rest at the hotel, or if you feel up to it, wander Mall Road, The Ridge and Christ Church at your own pace. There is no packed sightseeing today. Have dinner, sleep well, and be ready for the mountain drive the next morning. A note on check-in: it follows the hotel's policy, so if the room is not ready when you arrive in the morning, you can store your luggage at the property until check-in. Early room access depends on availability and cannot always be guaranteed. Any local transport or personal sightseeing in Shimla is not included unless it is stated in your booking.

After breakfast at the Shimla hotel, meet your mountain team and coordinator and begin the drive into Kinnaur, in a Tempo Traveller or SUV with snow chains carried for winter. Because you rested overnight in Shimla, you start this long road day fresh rather than straight off an overnight bus. Pass Kufri, Fagu, Theog, and Narkanda, drop to Rampur Bushahr, and run high above the Sutlej. Stop at the Kinnaur Gate, the archway that welcomes you into Kinnaur, then cross Karcham and climb into the Baspa valley. This is a full transfer day, so we keep it practical and reach Sangla by evening for dinner and rest.

A relaxed day with no packing and no change of hotel. After breakfast, head deeper into the Baspa valley towards Rakcham and Chitkul, the last village on this road before the border. Instead of a quick photo stop, the whole day is yours here. Walk around Chitkul, take in the mountains that mark the border with Tibet, spend some time by the Baspa river, and have a relaxed lunch before driving back to the same stay in Sangla by evening. Chitkul is covered whenever the road is safely accessible. After heavy snow, if the stretch beyond Rakcham is blocked, we explore the best safely accessible parts of the Baspa valley instead.

Leave Sangla and drive down to Karcham, then up the Sutlej past Reckong Peo and Puh to the Khab confluence, where the Sutlej and Spiti rivers meet and the green of Kinnaur gives way to the cold desert of Spiti. Climb the Ka Loops, a steep set of switchback bends, towards Nako, with a brief village or lakeside stop when access and daylight allow, though Nako is a visit here, not an overnight. Continue via Chango and Sumdo, the checkpost on the Kinnaur to Spiti border where IDs are checked, to Tabo. Settle in for the evening, with the monastery kept for the next morning rather than rushed after the drive.

Start with Tabo Monastery in the morning when it is open, one of the oldest in the Himalayas with murals over a thousand years old, following its rules on entry and photography. Then drive towards Kaza and, weather permitting, turn up at Sichling for Dhankar, the old capital set high on a ridge above the river. The Dhankar Lake hike is not included, as it is a high trek that is not safe in deep winter. Continue via Lingti to Kaza and settle into your base for the next two nights, with time for the market and cafes. Keep the evening easy so your body adjusts before the full sightseeing day. Gue and its mummy sit on a different side road that is usually frozen shut in winter, so it is not part of this trip.

The main sightseeing day in Spiti, kept on a weather-permitting basis. Start with the lower circuit above the Spiti river: the beautiful hilltop Key Monastery, then the high village of Kibber and Chicham Bridge, one of the highest bridges around. In the second half, climb to the high plateau, Langza with its giant Buddha statue and marine fossils, Komic, one of the highest villages connected by road, and Hikkim with the world's highest post office where you can post a card home. When the roads are clear, all of this fits into one full day. The exact order can still change, and your driver and coordinator pick the best sequence for the snow, ice, road clearance and daylight on the day. The journey back begins, one of the longest driving days. Head down the Spiti valley via Lingti and Sichling, past Tabo, and across Sumdo back into Kinnaur, with meal and comfort breaks along the way but no high village trip before departure and no detour to Gue. Descend the Ka Loops, pass the Khab confluence again, and continue via Puh and Reckong Peo to Kalpa for the night, back at Kinnaur's slightly lower altitude. If the full drive cannot be done safely within daylight, an intermediate halt may be needed.

This morning, before the long transfer, take a compact walk around Kalpa. Explore Old Kalpa, also called Chini village, with its old wooden houses, and visit the Narayan Nagini temple and the Kalpa monastery, all a short distance apart. If the road, weather, and local driving conditions are safe, the team may also stop at the Roghi Road cliff viewpoint, also called Suicide Point, for the sheer drop into the Sutlej gorge, though in snow, black ice, a road closure, or if the local driver judges the road unsafe, this stop is simply skipped. Aim to leave Kalpa by around 09:30 to 10:00, since this is a long winter drive back to Shimla via Reckong Peo, Karcham, the Kinnaur Gate, Rampur, and Narkanda, and there needs to be buffer for the road and the onward journey. Reach Shimla by evening, have dinner at your own expense, and board the overnight Volvo to Delhi. A hotel room to freshen up is not included, and the bus connection can be affected by delays on the mountain drive.

Arrive in Delhi in the morning, though the exact time can shift with traffic and road conditions. The trip ends here, with a warm goodbye from the team and a phone full of winter Spiti memories.
