Skip Pathankot Airport as your default plan. It is closer, but a Ministry of Civil Aviation answer dated 19 March 2026 said no flight was operating there at that time.

Khajjiar is roughly 24 km from Dalhousie. So when you know how to reach Dalhousie, the meadow and Chamba fall into place easily.

What Is the Best Way to Reach Dalhousie?

If you travel by train, Pathankot plus a road transfer is the cleanest choice. You reach the plains by rail and switch to a vehicle for the climb into the hills.

If you prefer flying, Kangra or Gaggal works when you find a suitable scheduled flight for your date. Amritsar becomes the smarter airport when flight connectivity is better, or when you are already including Amritsar in the plan.

Whatever you pick, the final approach to Dalhousie is by road. There is no way around that last stretch.

How Do You Reach Dalhousie by Air?

Kangra or Gaggal Airport

Kangra Airport, also called Gaggal Airport, is the practical nearby scheduled airport we point travellers towards in 2026. Current airline information shows Dharamshala or Kangra connectivity involving Delhi and Chandigarh.

Schedules shift often on these hill routes. Check the actual flight available for your travel date before you build the rest of the trip around it.

What About Pathankot Airport?

Pathankot Airport sits geographically closer to Dalhousie, which is why so many blogs still push it. But on 19 March 2026, the Ministry of Civil Aviation told the Lok Sabha that no flight was currently operating there.

The earlier Delhi to Pathankot UDAN route had finished its Viability Gap Funding tenure. The route went out for bidding again, but as of that date, no firm operating proposal had come in.

Consider Pathankot Airport only if a real scheduled flight is available for your dates. Do not book a trip assuming it will be running.

When Is Amritsar Airport the Better Choice?

The Amritsar to Dalhousie distance by road is roughly 197 km. A common route uses NH54 and NH154A.

Allow about 4 to 5 hours in normal conditions. Traffic, tea stops, weather, and hill road quality can all stretch this, so treat it as a planning estimate rather than a promise.

How Do You Reach Dalhousie by Train?

Pathankot is the main rail gateway we recommend. The onward road distance to Dalhousie is roughly 85 to 90 km, depending on your exact station, road, and end point.

We will not promise an exact road time here, because hill traffic and weather genuinely vary from day to day.

Is Chakki Bank a Different Railway Station?

This one confuses a lot of first timers. Chakki Bank railway station was renamed Pathankot Cantt.

So if an older article tells you to get down at Chakki Bank, it is not sending you somewhere new. You will still see the old name floating around in railway discussions and search results, but it is the same place.

Should You Use Nurpur Road?

Nurpur Road is a station on the Kangra Valley Railway, a 762 mm narrow gauge line connecting the Pathankot side with the Kangra Valley and Jogindernagar.

The Pathankot to Jogindernagar service resumed in June 2026 after a long disruption. That said, if your only goal is reaching Dalhousie efficiently, Pathankot stays the clearer gateway. 

The narrow gauge train matters when the slow, scenic railway ride is the point of your journey, not just the way to get somewhere.

Does Chandigarh Make Sense?

Do not think of Chandigarh as Dalhousie's nearest railway station, because it is not. Treat it as an alternative regional gateway. It works when you already have a convenient Chandigarh flight or train, or you are including Chandigarh in the trip anyway.

Delhi to Dalhousie

About 555 km by road. We will not invent a fixed driving time, because a Delhi road journey is much longer and depends heavily on traffic, breaks, and mountain road conditions. Most people break this journey rather than do it in one exhausting push.

How Do You Get from Dalhousie to Khajjiar and Chamba?

Dalhousie to Khajjiar

The Dalhousie to Khajjiar distance is roughly 24 km according to the Chamba district tourism authority.

A private cab or your own vehicle gives you the most flexibility, letting you stop for photos at the meadow whenever the light looks good. 

Local buses do serve the area, but we will not hand you a timetable that could be wrong by the time you read this. Published bus timings go stale fast, and frequency can be thin.

Sources genuinely disagree here. The Chamba district tourism authority gives roughly 45 km, while some commercial route sources show figures closer to 55 km.

So plan for 45 to 55 km depending on the exact route and end points. Do not trust any single blog claiming one perfect number.

Dalhousie to Dharamshala

The Dalhousie to Dharamshala distance is roughly 117 to 120 km, usually around 3.5 to 4 hours as an indicative normal drive. Since this is mountain travel, the real time can run longer.

Self Drive or Private Cab: Which Is Better?

This is a real decision, not a formality.

Self drive suits confident hill drivers who want to stop whenever they like and set their own pace. If you have driven mountain roads before and enjoy it, you will love the freedom.

A private cab is usually easier for families, senior travellers, anyone hauling luggage, people new to hill driving, and anyone doing a multi stop circuit through Dalhousie, Khajjiar, Chamba, Dharamshala, or Amritsar.

One practical point for 2026

In April 2026, authorities introduced a one way traffic arrangement on key roads inside Dalhousie town because of rising tourist traffic. 

You can still drive your own vehicle, but a local driver who already knows these one way loops saves you a lot of confused U-turns.

What Should You Check Before Driving in 2026?

Road conditions here are seasonal, and that matters more than people expect.

The Dalhousie to Lakkarmandi to Khajjiar route hit a winter closure in early 2026 and reopened for small vehicles on 13 February 2026 after being blocked for 22 days. That is three weeks of no access, which would wreck a fixed itinerary.

We are not saying the road is closed now. But snowfall, heavy rain, and landslides can shut access with little warning. If you travel in winter or monsoon, confirm the road status close to your departure date rather than trusting an old blog.

For a rail focused trip, run Delhi to Pathankot by train, then take a road transfer up to Dalhousie. Clean, simple, and the least tiring for most people.

For a Punjab plus Himachal trip, fly or train into Amritsar, see the Golden Temple, then drive Amritsar to Dalhousie to Khajjiar. You get two very different experiences on one holiday.
